SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Robert Theodore Carton of Rock Island,
4who passed away on November 11, 2017; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Bob Carton was born in Moline to Adiel and Augusta
6Carton on April 4, 1920; he graduated with honors from St.
7Ambrose College in 1942; he was a two-year captain of the
8basketball team and an All Conference Collegiate; he was later
9inducted into the St. Ambrose Basketball Hall of Fame; he was a
10World War II veteran and served in the European Theater at the
11Advanced Headquarters of the Ninth Air Force; he received the
12Bronze Star for meritorious service; he married Mary Evelyn
13Hagan, whom he met while serving in Germany; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Bob Carton began his career working with his
15mother at Carton's Grocery in Moline, the family business; he
16was later employed as Director of Employee Relations at the
17former Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Company; he retired after
1840 years of service; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Bob Carton, along with his wife, entered the
20Postulancy and Novitiate of the Third Order of St. Francis at
21Sacred Heart Church in Peoria and they were professed as
22Tertiaries in 1950; they were generous in support of Catholic

1mission projects; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Bob Carton was active in his community and served
3on the Board of Directors for Catholic Social Services, for
4Skills Incorporated, for Project Now, and for the Rock Island
5Chamber of Commerce; he was also a past president and
6longstanding member of the Rock Island Optimist Club; he
7enjoyed attending sporting events in support of his children,
8grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; his love of a good game
9was only surpassed by his love for the kids; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Bob Carton was preceded in death by his parents;
11his wife, Mary; his son, Benedict; his sons-in-law, Jerry
12Kline, Bob Sproston, and Bob Walas; his grandchildren, Kyle
13Sproston and Helen Carton; his sisters, Hilda, Ann, and Sister
14Mary Antonia O.S.F.; and his brothers, Rt. Rev. Msgr. George A.
15Carton, John, and Joseph; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Bob Carton is survived by his sons, Anthony
17(Cynthia), Leo (Mary), and Gerry; and his daughters, Barbara
18McAtee, Rita Sproston, Mary (John) Pocivasek, Ann Walas, and
19Regina Kline; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
22Robert Theodore Carton and extend our sincere condolences to
