| 1 | | SENATE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Sabina Ott, who passed away on June 28, | 4 | | 2018 at the age of 62; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Sabina Ott was born to Jewish immigrants Aaron and | 6 | | Rita Ott, who landed in New York before settling in Los | 7 | | Angeles; she completed her BFA in painting at the San Francisco | 8 | | Art Institute in 1979 and earned her MFA in painting there in | 9 | | 1981; in the 1970s, when she was an art student at SFAI, she | 10 | | ran a space with her friends called Jetwave, a site for art, | 11 | | punk music, parties, and more; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Sabina Ott had her first solo show at the | 13 | | Institute of Contemporary Art of Los Angeles in 1983; she then | 14 | | went on to participate in more than 100 international solo and | 15 | | group shows; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Sabina Ott moved to Chicago in 2005 to lead the | 17 | | Art and Design Department at Columbia College, where she | 18 | | experienced a shift in her work and began to focus primarily on | 19 | | the public possibilities of her projects; she had the foresight | 20 | | and generosity to embark on projects that celebrated the here | 21 | | and now of Chicago's art world; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Sabina Ott was known as "Artist Mother of | 2 | | Chicago"; she knew how to bloom where she was planted, | 3 | | catalyzing and connecting the artists in her community; her | 4 | | approach to people was as vast and welcoming as her approach to | 5 | | media; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Sabina Ott was a feminist to the core; a friend | 7 | | and Columbia College colleague said, "She made feminism a lust | 8 | | for life and magic moment...committing to activism and | 9 | | knowledge through joy and a dream of a better view from a wild | 10 | | space"; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Sabina Ott gave so much to so many; her sense of | 12 | | community was remarkable, and she strove to make people feel | 13 | | connected; to her loved ones, she was nonstop, exuding | 14 | | inimitable energy and conviction; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Sabina Ott was preceded in death by her parents; | 16 | | and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Sabina Ott is survived by her husband, John M. | 18 | | Paulett; her stepdaughter, Kelly (Craig) Mitchell; and her | 19 | | granddaughter, Hannah Mitchell; therefore, be it
