SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
105 ILCS 5/22-27

    Amends the School Code. Provides that, upon request, the school board of a school district that maintains grades 10 through 12 may posthumously award a diploma to any service member who was killed in action while performing active military duty in the armed forces of the United States if he or she: (1) resided in an area currently within the district; (2) left high school before graduating to serve in the armed forces of the United States; and (3) did not receive a high school diploma. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning education.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing Section
522-27 as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 5/22-27)
7    Sec. 22-27. World War II, Korean Conflict, and Vietnam
8Conflict veterans; service member killed in action; diplomas.
9    (a) Upon request, the school board of any district that
10maintains grades 10 through 12 may award a diploma to any
11honorably discharged veteran who:
12        (1) served in the armed forces of the United States
13    during World War II, the Korean Conflict, or the Vietnam
14    Conflict;
15        (2) resided within an area currently within the
16    district;
17        (3) left high school before graduating in order to
18    serve in the armed forces of the United States; and
19        (4) has not received a high school diploma.
20    (a-5) Upon request, the school board of a school district
21that maintains grades 10 through 12 may posthumously award a
22diploma to any service member who was killed in action while
23performing active military duty with the armed forces of the

1United States if all of the following criteria have been met:
2        (1) He or she resided in an area currently within the
3    district.
4        (2) He or she left high school before graduating to
5    serve in the armed forces of the United States.
6        (3) He or she did not receive a high school diploma.
7    (b) The State Board of Education and the Department of
8Veterans' Affairs may issue rules consistent with the
9provisions of this Section that are necessary to implement this
10Section.

12    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
13becoming law.
