| 2 | | WHEREAS, The City of Highland Park was granted a charter by | 3 | | the General Assembly in
March of 1869; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Highland Park was the fourth North Shore Community | 5 | | to receive a
charter; since its inception, it has grown from | 6 | | 1,154 citizens in 1880 to nearly 30,000 in 2018; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Highland Park is under the leadership of Mayor | 8 | | Nancy Rotering, the first
female mayor of Highland Park, and | 9 | | City Council Members, Anthony E. Blumberg, Michelle
Holleman, | 10 | | Daniel A. Kaufman, Alyssa Knobel, Kim Stone, and Adam Stolberg; | 11 | | and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Highland Park boasts a vibrant downtown district | 13 | | supportive of small
businesses, amazing restaurants, and | 14 | | walkable outdoor shopping accessible to all its residents
and | 15 | | visitors; and | 16 | | WHEREAS, Highland Park is consistently rated one of the | 17 | | best places to live in
Illinois, including a 2018 top 20 | 18 | | ranking as one of the Best Small Towns in America, a 2018 top
| 19 | | five ranking as one of the Top Lakefront "Beach Towns" in | 20 | | America, and a 2018 ranking as one
of the One Hundred Safest | 21 | | Cities in America; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Highland Park is a leader in the protection and | 2 | | preservation of green
spaces, culturally significant places, | 3 | | and historical landmarks, including the Ravinia Festival, the
| 4 | | Willits House by Frank Lloyd Wright, and several parks designed | 5 | | by landscape architect Jens
Jensen; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Highland Park is home to prominent cultural and | 7 | | civic leaders including
Elisha Grey, the developer of the | 8 | | telephone prototype, Dr. John Grunsfeld, a physicist and
NASA | 9 | | astronaut who participate in five space shuttle missions, and | 10 | | Rachel Brosnahan, an Emmy
Award-winning actress; therefore, be | 11 | | it
| 12 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 13 | | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE | 14 | | SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we declare March 1, 2019 as | 15 | | "Highland Park Sesquicentennial Day" in the State of Illinois; | 16 | | and be it further
| 17 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 18 | | presented to Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering as a symbol of | 19 | | our respect and esteem.
