HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to raise awareness surrounding lung cancer; and

WHEREAS, Lung cancer is uncontrolled multiplication and growth of the lung cells resulting in malignant tumor formation; and

WHEREAS, The condition is characterized by an intense cough, the appearance of blood after coughing, and shortness of breath; and

WHEREAS, Treatment involves surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy; and

WHEREAS, There are two main types of lung cancer, small cell lung cancer and the more prevalent non-small cell lung cancer, which constitute approximately 80 percent of lung cancers; and

WHEREAS, Lung cancer is the world's leading cause of cancer deaths; and

WHEREAS, More people die due to lung cancer than due to prostate, breast, and pancreatic cancers combined; and

WHEREAS, Lung cancer claims the lives of more women in the U.S. than breast, ovarian, and cervical cancer combined; and

WHEREAS, Although lung cancer is the number one cancer killer in the world, lung cancer is the most underfunded cancer; and

WHEREAS, Increased awareness of lung cancer will lead to increased knowledge and support for both lung cancer research and the families affected by the disease; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare November 2019 as Lung Cancer Awareness Month in the State of Illinois and encourage continued research on lung cancer and community support for those affected by the disease.
