| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate Enoch "Nick" Scull Jr. on | 4 | | being awarded the French Legion of Honor, the highest award
| 5 | | given by the French government, on October 24, 2019 for his | 6 | | role in liberating France during
World War II; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Nick Scull was raised on a farm in the Plano area | 8 | | and graduated from Plano High
School, where he excelled in | 9 | | sports; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Nick Scull entered active service in the United | 11 | | States Armed Forces at Camp Grant
on April 3, 1943; he began | 12 | | serving as a combat engineer with Company B of the 103rd
| 13 | | Engineer Battalion, 28th Infantry Division; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Nick Scull was deployed to Europe a few months | 15 | | prior to his participation in D-Day
and the invasions of | 16 | | Normandy, northern France, the Ardennes, and the Rhineland | 17 | | between
January 1944 and April 1945; and | 18 | | WHEREAS, Nick Scull was captured by the Germans during the | 19 | | Battle of the Bulge in
December 1944 and survived 103 days in | 20 | | German prison camps before being liberated by
General Patton's | 21 | | Army on March 30, 1945; and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Nick Scull was discharged from the United States | 2 | | Army on November 1, 1945 at
Fort Sheridan; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, For his service, Nick Scull earned the | 4 | | European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign
Ribbon with four | 5 | | Bronze Battle Stars, two Overseas Service Bars, the Good | 6 | | Conduct Medal, the
WWII Victory Medal, the American Theater | 7 | | Ribbon, two Purple Hearts, the P.O.W. Medal, and
the | 8 | | Presidential Unit Citation for heroism; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, After returning from the war, Nick Scull lived a | 10 | | happy and successful
life, raising five children with his wife, | 11 | | Patricia, playing a year of minor league baseball with the
| 12 | | Tampa Bay Smokers, running a barber shop, and working as a | 13 | | foreman at Plano Metal
Specialties Inc.; therefore, be it
| 14 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 15 | | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 16 | | we congratulate Enoch "Nick"
Scull Jr. on being awarded the | 17 | | French Legion of Honor and recognize his service to the United | 18 | | States; and be it further
| 19 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | 20 | | presented to Nick Scull and American Legion Post 395 in Plano.
