| 1 | | SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General
| 3 | | Assembly pays honor and respect to those individuals who have
| 4 | | served our country and, in doing so, have made the ultimate
| 5 | | sacrifice for our nation; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Ronald E. Powers was born on June 12, 1948 and was | 7 | | raised in Macoupin County; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Ronald Powers joined the United States Army and | 9 | | served as a
Private First Class with the 9th Infantry Division, | 10 | | 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry, Combat Support Company; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, PFC Powers began his tour of duty in South Vietnam | 12 | | on September 5, 1968; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, On October 4, 1968, PFC Powers was killed in | 14 | | action while serving in the Dinh Tuong Province
in South | 15 | | Vietnam; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, PFC Powers was awarded the Purple Heart, the | 17 | | Bronze Star, the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service | 18 | | Medal,
and the Vietnam Campaign Medal; his name can be found on | 19 | | the Vietnam Veterans Memorial
on Panel 41w, line 7; therefore, | 20 | | be it

| 1 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | 2 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES | 3 | | CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate Illinois Route 16 from its | 4 | | intersection with Illinois Route 111 to its intersection with | 5 | | US Route 67 as the "PFC
Ronald E. Powers Memorial Highway"; and | 6 | | be it further | 7 | | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
| 8 | | is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
| 9 | | State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
| 10 | | giving notice of the name
"PFC
Ronald E. Powers Memorial | 11 | | Highway"; and be it further
| 12 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | 13 | | presented to the family of PFC Powers and the Secretary of the | 14 | | Illinois Department of Transportation.
