| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Barbara Elaine Russell Brown of Highland | 4 | | Park, who passed away on January 7, 2019; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Barbara Brown was born in Chicago on February 14, | 6 | | 1929; she grew up in the Austin neighborhood in a family of | 7 | | Jewish immigrants from Romania and Russia; her father died of | 8 | | wounds sustained in World War I, shortly before the start of | 9 | | World War II; after high school, she began studies at what was | 10 | | then Rockford College; she earned her bachelor's degree in | 11 | | economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; | 12 | | she married Roger Brown on May 16, 1953; shortly thereafter, | 13 | | they moved to Highland Park; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Barbara Brown served on the research staff of | 15 | | Chicago's Field Museum for nearly 50 years, concentrating in | 16 | | mammalogy and specializing in New World species; she was a | 17 | | participant on several of the museum's research expeditions to | 18 | | Brazil's Cerrado and Atlantic Coastal forests; she was also the | 19 | | author of an important treatise on marsupials; the scientific | 20 | | community recognized her work and named a number of tropical | 21 | | mammals and birds in her honor; a curatorial position in | 22 | | ornithology at the Science Museum of Minnesota bears her name, | 23 | | as well as a nature reserve that forms part of the Chicago |

| 1 | | Botanic Gardens; and
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Barbara Brown enriched the community; she joined | 3 | | the Highland Park Library Board, served on the city's | 4 | | Environmental Commission, was a guide at the Heller Nature | 5 | | Center, and volunteered at her children's elementary schools | 6 | | and at their many extracurricular activities; she also served | 7 | | on the Woman's Board of the Field Museum and the Chicago | 8 | | Botanic Garden Board; she was president of the Evanston North | 9 | | Shore Bird Club for decades; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Barbara Brown was a dedicated birdwatcher and | 11 | | "birded" throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, and | 12 | | Central America; she traveled the world with Roger as well, | 13 | | attended the four grand Slam tournaments, and visited London, | 14 | | Rome, Paris, Tbilsi, Tehran, and Yogyakartta; she regularly | 15 | | engaged in tennis and swimming; she enjoyed gardening, | 16 | | classical music, mysteries, and Asian art; and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Barbara Brown is survived by her husband, Roger; | 18 | | her children, Jeffrey, Owen, Andrew, Henry, and Vanessa; her 18 | 19 | | grandchildren; and her seven great-grandchildren; therefore, | 20 | | be it
