| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Jean A. Herbst of Joliet, who passed away | 4 | | on August 8, 2020; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Jean Herbst was born in Joliet to Martin and Anna | 6 | | (Buchar) Juricic on December 28, 1935; she attended St. Joseph | 7 | | Grade School; she graduated from St. Francis Academy in 1953; | 8 | | she married Gerald "Jerry" Herbst at St. Joseph Catholic Church | 9 | | in Joliet on November 13, 1954, and he preceded her in death in | 10 | | 2015; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Jean Herbst was a dedicated employee of the | 12 | | Ordinance Ammunition Command (OAC), the Argonne National | 13 | | Laboratory, the College of St. Francis, and the Burr Oak | 14 | | Library System; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Jean Herbst was extremely generous in sharing her | 16 | | time, talents, and treasures; while raising her own children, | 17 | | she was an integral member of the Troy Grade School and Joliet | 18 | | West High School band programs, and she served as the secretary | 19 | | and uniform manager for the latter; she spent countless hours | 20 | | crocheting hats for service men and women, which were | 21 | | distributed though Operation Care Package; she also made baby | 22 | | blankets, which were donated to Birthright; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Jean Herbst was deeply committed to her faith, and | 2 | | she was very active in the church community; she was a member | 3 | | of the St. Agnes Sodality and the Blessed Virgin Mary Society | 4 | | at St. Joseph Parish, the Sacred Heart League at St. John the | 5 | | Baptist Parish, the Council of Catholic Women, the Junior | 6 | | Catholic Women's League, and KSKJ – St. Genevieve Lodge #108; | 7 | | she served in a number of leadership positions, including | 8 | | treasurer of the Slovenian Union of America (formerly Slovenian | 9 | | Women's Union of America) and chairperson of the respect for | 10 | | life and the vocation committees of St. Ambrose Parish; she was | 11 | | honored as Woman of the Year by the Council of Catholic Women | 12 | | in 2002 and by the Slovenian Union of America in 2006; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Alongside her husband, Jean Herbst was an active | 14 | | participant of the Organ Transplant Support Group (OTS) in | 15 | | Naperville and spent numerous hours volunteering at the | 16 | | Illinois Driver's License Facility; they were honored with the | 17 | | Presidential Award from OTS for their contributions in | 18 | | promoting organ donation and organ donor awareness in the | 19 | | community in 2004; and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Jean Herbst was known for her affable personality, | 21 | | her kindness, her gentleness, and her gift of conversation; she | 22 | | enjoyed gardening and watching the wildlife in her yard; she | 23 | | will be remembered for being a devoted wife, mother, and |

| 1 | | grandmother; and
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Jean Herbst was preceded in death by her husband | 3 | | of 60 years, Gerald R. "Jerry" Herbst; her parents; her sister, | 4 | | Joyce (late Richard) Korst; her nephew, Alan Kopta; her | 5 | | father-in-law and mother-in-law, Alois and Marie (Welter) | 6 | | Herbst; and her numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Jean Herbst is survived by her children, Rev. | 8 | | Robert M. Herbst, Rita (Herbst) Bottomley, and Renee Herbst; | 9 | | her granddaughter, Elaine Bottomley; her godchildren, Marilyn | 10 | | Boucher, Jerry Buchar, Tiffany McEachern, and Timothy Human; | 11 | | and her numerous family members and friends; therefore, be it
| 12 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | 13 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 14 | | Jean A. Herbst and extend our sincere condolences to her | 15 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved; and be it further
| 16 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 17 | | presented to the family of Jean Herbst as an expression of our | 18 | | deepest sympathy.
