SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General
3Assembly pays honor and respect to those individuals who have
4served our country and, in doing so, have made the ultimate
5sacrifice for our nation; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Ronald E. Powers was born on June 12, 1948 and was
7raised in Macoupin County; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Ronald Powers joined the United States Army and
9served as a Private First Class with the 9th Infantry
10Division, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry, Combat Support
11Company; and
 
12    WHEREAS, PFC Powers began his tour of duty in South
13Vietnam on September 5, 1968; and
 
14    WHEREAS, On October 4, 1968, PFC Powers was killed in
15action while serving in the Dinh Tuong Province in South
16Vietnam; and
 
17    WHEREAS, PFC Powers was awarded the Purple Heart, the
18Bronze Star, the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service
19Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal; his name can be found on
20the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Panel 41w, line 7; therefore,

2    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
3ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF
4REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate Illinois
5Route 16 from its intersection with Illinois Route 111 to its
6intersection with US Route 67 as the "PFC Ronald E. Powers
7Memorial Highway"; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
9is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
10State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
11giving notice of the name "PFC Ronald E. Powers Memorial
12Highway"; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
14presented to the family of PFC Powers and the Secretary of the
15Illinois Department of Transportation.
