SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Martin "Marty" Ozinga III, who passed
4away on April 26, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Marty Ozinga earned a degree in psychology at
6Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan; he was married to
7his wife, Ruth, for 40 years until her passing in 2010, and
8together they raised their six sons; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Marty Ozinga began working for Ozinga, a
10fourth-generation family business best known for its red and
11white striped concrete mixer trucks, at age 15; he started as a
12$1-per-hour laborer in the company's first yard in Evergreen
13Park; by age 18, he was driving a ready-mix concrete truck for
14union wages; in 1973, he became general manager at age 23 and,
15in 1985, succeeded his father as president of Ozinga; along
16with his cousins Rich and Jim, he led the business through a
17period of tremendous growth; this included expanding into the
18downtown Chicago market where Ozinga supplied concrete for
19high-profile projects such as the construction of the new
20Comiskey Park (now Guaranteed Rate Field), the renovation of
21Soldier Field, and the production of more than 250,000 cubic
22yards of concrete for the Dan Ryan Expressway; he most
23recently served as the chairman of the board of the company; in

12012, he handed over the operations of the family business to
2his six sons and their cousin, Jeff; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Marty Ozinga is survived by his wife, Melissa;
4his six sons and their wives; and his twenty-nine
5grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
7ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
8Martin "Marty" Ozinga III and extend our sincere condolences
9to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
10it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the family Marty Ozinga as an expression of our
13deepest sympathy.
