| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | 3 | | to learn of the death of Lawrence G. "Larry" Mais, who passed | 4 | | away on July 8, 2022; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Larry Mais was born to George and Margaret | 6 | | (Fuess) Mais in South Ozone Park, Queens, New York on | 7 | | September 23, 1925; he was raised during the Great Depression; | 8 | | he graduated from John Adams High School; he enlisted in the | 9 | | U.S. Army in 1942, was assigned to the 86 Infantry, Black Hawk | 10 | | Division, saw action in the Battle of the Bulge, and was | 11 | | awarded the Bronze Star for combat actions; after VE Day, he | 12 | | was deployed to the Philippines; following his military | 13 | | service, he attended Saint John's University on the GI bill, | 14 | | attending night school while working during the day, and | 15 | | earned his bachelor's degree in English in 1952; he married | 16 | | Catherine "Katie" Meehan at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in | 17 | | Brooklyn, New York, and they settled in Bellerose, New York | 18 | | and had four children; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Larry Mais took a job with Ametek in 1965, moving | 20 | | his family from the state of New York to the Quad Cities, where | 21 | | they became parishioners at St. Anne's in East Moline; later, | 22 | | as his job transferred to San Diego, they became parishioners | 23 | | at Our Lady of Grace Parish in El Cajon, California, where he |

| 1 | | was involved in the food pantry and helping the poor and | 2 | | homeless; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, After retirement, Larry Mais and Katie moved back | 4 | | to the Quad Cities to live with their daughter, Mary, and be | 5 | | near family; they were parishioners at St. Ambrose in Milan | 6 | | and St. Pius X in Rock Island; they were also active in the | 7 | | food pantry and prison ministry; for their work with the | 8 | | prison ministry at the East Moline Correctional Center, they | 9 | | were awarded Volunteers of The Year by the State of Illinois; | 10 | | and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Larry Mais was known as a man of wit and an | 12 | | inspiration to many of his fellow volunteers; he loved reading | 13 | | novels, freshwater fishing at Lake Okoboji in Iowa, and | 14 | | deep-sea fishing; he was a devoted pipe smoker, a crossword | 15 | | puzzle aficionado, and a contract bridge player; he also | 16 | | enjoyed participating in local bowling leagues; he was a | 17 | | lifelong Brooklyn Dodgers fan until the team moved to the West | 18 | | Coast, becoming a New York Mets fan in 1962; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Larry Mais was the father of Tom, Mary Anderson, | 20 | | Peggy (Jeff) Kendrick, and Tricia (Bob) Havlir; the | 21 | | grandfather of Major Ryan Anderson, Matt (Melanie McKelvey) | 22 | | Anderson, Kristin (Terry) Stambaugh, Steve Mais, Bridget Mais, | 23 | | M.D., Michael (Rita) Kendrick, Ed.D., Sam (Becky) Kendrick, |

| 4 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | 5 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 6 | | Lawrence G. "Larry" Mais and extend our sincere condolences to | 7 | | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | 8 | | further
