| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | 3 | | to learn of the death of Esequiel Bernardo "Bernie" Rangel, | 4 | | formerly of Silvis, who passed away on September 9, 2022; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Bernie Rangel was born to Hilario and Lena | 6 | | (Blanco) Rangel in Moline on September 28, 1945; he served in | 7 | | the U.S. Army; he then served as an instructor in the U.S. | 8 | | Marine Corps Reserves and the U.S. Army Reserves; he was | 9 | | honorably discharged with the rank of master sergeant after | 10 | | over 30 years of service; he married Catherine (Coker) | 11 | | Creighton on the beach at MacDill Air Force Base, Tampa, | 12 | | Florida on September 8, 2019; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Bernie Rangel was passionate about learning; he | 14 | | graduated from United Township High School in 1963, where he | 15 | | excelled in cross country and wrestling and later taught; he | 16 | | attended Black Hawk College and Augustana College; he received | 17 | | his Bachelor of Science from Southern Illinois University | 18 | | Carbondale; he earned technical certificates in welding, auto | 19 | | body mechanics, diesel mechanics, and auto repair from Scott | 20 | | Community College; he was in the process of earning his | 21 | | graduate degree from Western Illinois University when his | 22 | | devotion to serving as a caretaker for his parents resulted in | 23 | | an 11-year pause in his studies; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Bernie Rangel worked at Rock Island Lines, ADM, | 2 | | and International Harvester; he retired as a union carpenter; | 3 | | and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Bernie Rangel had many interests, including | 5 | | officiating wrestling, volleyball, basketball, football, | 6 | | softball, and baseball; while his favorite sport was | 7 | | basketball, he was most proud of his collegiate volleyball | 8 | | officiating experience; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Bernie Rangel was preceded in death by his | 10 | | parents and his siblings, Richard Rangel, Arthur Rangel, | 11 | | Dolores Rangel, Hilario (Henry) Rangel, and Bernadette | 12 | | Schaecher; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Bernie Rangel is survived by his wife, Catherine | 14 | | Creighton; his stepson, Paul (Sarah) Creighton; his | 15 | | step-grandchildren, Miley and Owen Creighton; his siblings, | 16 | | Estella (John Morgan) Rangel, Cecilia Rangel, and Mike Rangel; | 17 | | his brother-in-law, Maurice Schaecher; and numerous nieces, | 18 | | nephews, and cousins; therefore, be it
| 19 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | 20 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 21 | | Esequiel Bernardo "Bernie" Rangel and extend our sincere |
