| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION | 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the Village of Strasburg | 4 | | on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of its founding; and | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Village of Strasburg is located on the Grand | 6 | | Prairie Trail in the southeastern part of Shelby County, and | 7 | | the land was originally visited by many covered wagons on | 8 | | their way east of the Sangamon country by individuals who | 9 | | watered their horses, oxen, and cows in the tributary to | 10 | | Richland Creek, a tributary that runs through nearly the | 11 | | center of the village; and | 12 | | WHEREAS, The territory within and around where the Village | 13 | | of Strasburg was established possesses rich soil, and the | 14 | | first effort to actually farm the land was made in | 15 | | approximately 1840; and | 16 | | WHEREAS, Some of the first settlers to the Village of | 17 | | Strasburg arrived in the 1850s, originally hailing from | 18 | | southern Germany and known as "Low Germans" to distinguish | 19 | | them from the "High Germans" of northern Germany who spoke an | 20 | | altogether different dialect; the village gained a number of | 21 | | High German settlers in the 1860s and 1870s and a considerable | 22 | | number of Pennsylvania Dutch in the 1880s; and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, The early settlers of the Village of Strasburg | 2 | | were a religious people and soon founded St. Paul's | 3 | | congregation, holding the first service in 1866 and building | 4 | | the church in 1875; and | 5 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, the Village of Strasburg has been | 6 | | home to hundreds of men and women who have loyally served their | 7 | | country as members of the U.S. Armed Forces in a number of | 8 | | conflicts, including the Civil War, the Vietnam War, and | 9 | | Operation Enduring Freedom, and the village continues to be | 10 | | home to a number of members of the military and veterans today; | 11 | | and | 12 | | WHEREAS, The Village of Strasburg's service organizations | 13 | | have donated considerable time and effort to generously raise | 14 | | and provide funds for a myriad of worthy causes in the | 15 | | community, the area, and beyond, and these organizations | 16 | | include American Legion Post #289, American Legion Auxiliary | 17 | | Unit #289, the Strasburg Lions Club, and the Strasburg | 18 | | Community Action Network (SCAN); and | 19 | | WHEREAS, Today, the Village of Strasburg stands as a | 20 | | shining example of the results of hard work, self-discipline, | 21 | | and genuine care and concern for one's family and neighbors; | 22 | | its citizens live with respect for the past and a vision for |

| 1 | | the future; and | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Village of Strasburg will be celebrating its | 3 | | 150th anniversary from June 14 to June 16, 2024; therefore, be | 4 | | it | 5 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 6 | | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 7 | | we congratulate the Village of Strasburg on the 150th | 8 | | anniversary of its founding, and we wish its citizens | 9 | | continued success in the future; and be it further | 10 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 11 | | presented to the Village of Strasburg as an expression of our | 12 | | esteem and respect. |
