| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | 3 | | to learn of the death of Michael Neil Smith, who passed away on | 4 | | January 7, 2023; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Michael Smith was born to Neil and Barbara Smith | 6 | | in Vandalia on September 28, 1967; he obtained a degree in | 7 | | Business Administration from Greenville College, known today | 8 | | as Greenville University, in Greenville; he later earned a | 9 | | teaching certificate, a master's degree, and a specialist | 10 | | degree in Educational Administration from Eastern Illinois | 11 | | University; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Michael Smith first worked for the Keebler | 13 | | Company and Prudential Financial while coaching basketball at | 14 | | St. Elmo High School; after earning his teaching certificate, | 15 | | he taught junior high school history and high school business | 16 | | while coaching junior high and high school basketball in | 17 | | Oakland, where he later became the K-12 principal and finally | 18 | | the superintendent; he also served as the superintendent at | 19 | | the Tuscola and Beardstown School Districts; and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Michael Smith loved setting goals for himself, | 21 | | including learning to swim as an adult, training for and | 22 | | running multiple half-marathons, studying Spanish with daily |

| 1 | | practice, donating blood five times a year, and golfing once a | 2 | | month for 46-consecutive months; he had his own brand of humor | 3 | | that made life fun; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Michael Smith is survived by his wife of 27 | 5 | | years, Shannon (Brachbill); his parents; his daughter, Ashton; | 6 | | his sisters, Nancy Mills and Cathy (Curt) Strange; his many | 7 | | relatives and friends; and his dog, Baxter; therefore, be it
| 8 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | 9 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 10 | | Michael Neil Smith and extend our sincere condolences to his | 11 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | 12 | | further
| 13 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
