SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Don David Smith of Des Plaines, who
4passed away on October 7, 2023; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Don Smith was a native of Ohio; he served as a
6peacetime soldier in the United States Army as a Russian
7translator on the West German border, where he met his wife;
8and
 
9    WHEREAS, Don Smith was employed by Maine West Township
10High School, where he taught Spanish for 33 years; he was
11involved with the AFS program and the Spanish club; he
12organized and chaperoned several trips to Mexico and Europe;
13and
 
14    WHEREAS, Don Smith volunteered at Genesis teaching English
15to Spanish speakers and volunteered for several years at the
16Self Help Closet and Pantry of Des Plaines after retirement;
17he enjoyed singing and was part of Four on the Floor at Maine
18West and the Chicago Veterans Chorus; he loved to read and
19travel in his spare time; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Don Smith is survived by his wife of 63 years,
21Rosemarie Smith; his children, Erik Smith, Britta (Jay)

1Smith-Goeppner, and Jennifer (Jeff) Mindykowski; and his
2grandchildren, J.D. Mindykowski, Allison Mindykowski, and
3Danielle Mindykowski; therefore, be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
5ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
6Don David Smith and extend our sincere condolences to his
7family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
8further
 
9    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10presented to the family of Don Smith as an expression of our
11deepest sympathy.
