HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General
3Assembly pays honor and respect to the truly great individuals
4who have served our country and State and, in doing so, have
5made the ultimate sacrifice; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Chief Arthur L. Weston of the Rockton Police
7Department responded to a burglary-in-progress call on October
827, 1977, locating the suspect in an upstairs bedroom; after
9an intense struggle, he was able to place the suspect into
10custody; as he was transporting the suspect to jail, he began
11to experience chest pains and called for backup; he was taken
12to a local hospital, where he died approximately one hour
13later; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Chief Weston was born to Leo and Dorothy Weston
15in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on February 1, 1925; he graduated from
16West High School in 1943; he served in the U.S. Army during
17World War II; he married Marion J. Peck on August 21, 1947; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Chief Weston started his career in law
19enforcement as a patrolman for the Loves Park Police
20Department; he was the former police chief and organizer of
21the Rock Valley College Security Force; he also served as
22police chief in Byron and Roscoe as well as deputy coroner for

1Winnebago County and deputy of the Winnebago County Sheriff's
2Department; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Chief Weston was a proud member of the Illinois
4Police Association, the Rockton Rotary Club, and the Rockton
5American Legion; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Chief Weston was a loving husband and father to
7his wife and his five children; and
 
8    WHEREAS, At the time of his passing, Chief Weston was
9survived by his wife, Marion Weston, and his children, Cindy
10Gau, Vickey Roberts, Debbie Pasch, Wanda Vertterlli, and
11William Weston; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Chief Weston gave his life in the line of duty,
13and his service to and sacrifice for the people of Illinois
14should never be forgotten; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
16HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
17SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the section of
18Illinois Route 2 in Rockton as the "Chief Arthur L. Weston
19Memorial Highway"; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation

1is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
2State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
3giving notice of the name "Chief Arthur L. Weston Memorial
4Highway"; and be it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
6presented to the family of Chief Weston and the Secretary of
7the Illinois Department of Transportation.
