| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 |
| learn of the death of
Margaret Betty Martin of Peoria, who | 4 |
| passed away on December 14, 2008; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Margaret Martin was born on August 25, 1922 in | 6 |
| Decorah, Iowa; her parents were James and Dorothy Marlow | 7 |
| Malanaphy; she married Glen J. Martin on April 26, 1947 in | 8 |
| Decorah, Iowa; and
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, Margaret Martin was employed as a waitress at | 10 |
| Wright's Cafe in the 1950s; while working there, she became | 11 |
| picket captain for the Hotel and Restaurant Employees Local 16, | 12 |
| serving in that position during the city-wide strike in 1958; | 13 |
| after the strike ended, she became an assistant business agent | 14 |
| for the Local and was elected vice president in 1960; in 1966, | 15 |
| she was elected president of the Local, a position she held | 16 |
| until her retirement in 1993; she served as a trustee on the | 17 |
| Local's insurance and pension funds; she served as the Local's | 18 |
| delegate to numerous labor organizations and State and national | 19 |
| conventions; she also served as president of the Illinois | 20 |
| Culinary Alliance and started the Local's annual Christmas | 21 |
| basket drive for the needy; and
| 22 |
| WHEREAS, Margaret Martin was active in many organizations |

| and on several boards, including the Visiting Nurses | 2 |
| Association; she was recognized by the American Red Cross for | 3 |
| the many pints of blood she had donated; and
| 4 |
| WHEREAS, Margaret Martin was a political activist, | 5 |
| coordinating many voter registration drives and Get Out the | 6 |
| Vote drives; she was known by many local, State, and national | 7 |
| politicians as Betty; she also served as a poll judge; and
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, Margaret Martin was extremely proud of her Irish | 9 |
| roots; she helped organize and was the first president of the | 10 |
| Peoria Division of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and | 11 |
| served as chairperson of the State Board's Catholic Action | 12 |
| Committee; in 2005, she was awarded a lifetime division | 13 |
| membership by the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians; she was | 14 |
| also an active member of the St. Patrick Society of Peoria and, | 15 |
| in 1992, was designated the Society's Irish Mother of the Year; | 16 |
| she and her family also served as a host family for an Irish | 17 |
| exchange program; and

| WHEREAS, Margaret Martin was a member of St. Vincent de | 19 |
| Paul Catholic Church; and | 20 |
| WHEREAS, Margaret Martin was preceded in death by her | 21 |
| husband; her brother, John Malanaphy; and her sister, Joyce | 22 |
| Lynch; and

| WHEREAS, Margaret Martin is survived by her sons, John | 2 |
| (JoAnn) Martin and James (Fay) Martin; her daughter, Susan | 3 |
| (Larry) Satterfield; her brother, James (Jean) Malanaphy; her | 4 |
| sisters, Mary Lou (Leo) Manning, Dorothy (John) Kendall, and | 5 |
| Julia (Laverne) Massman; her grandchildren, Beth Martin, Kevin | 6 |
| Martin, Tom Satterfield, Laura Satterfield, Marsha | 7 |
| Satterfield, Jeff Martin, and Vali Quast; and her five | 8 |
| great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
| 9 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | 10 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | 11 |
| her family and friends, the passing of Margaret Betty Martin; | 12 |
| and be it further
| 13 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 14 |
| presented to the family of Margaret Martin as an expression of | 15 |
| our sympathy.
