| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Mary Ruth Applegate of Downers Grove, who | 4 | | passed away on December 28, 2010; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, She was born in Decatur, the daughter of Arthur T. | 6 | | and Ethel Day; in 1948, she married George B. Applegate and | 7 | | moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where she lived for the next 40 | 8 | | years; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife and wonderful mother to her | 10 | | two children; as they grew older, she returned to work as a | 11 | | secretary for the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and | 12 | | Firearms, and later attained the position of tax examiner; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, After the death of her husband and her retirement, | 14 | | she moved to Downers Grove, where she lived for the last 18 | 15 | | years; throughout her life, she had a love of books and | 16 | | learning; and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Unable to attend college as a young woman, as a | 18 | | retiree she attended classes at the College of DuPage, | 19 | | accumulating several years of college credit in English; she | 20 | | also served as an officer of the AARP and volunteered at Little | 21 | | Friends; she was an independent, progressive woman who cared |

| 1 | | about children and animals and believed in equality and justice | 2 | | for all; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Mary Ruth Applegate is survived by her daughter, | 4 | | Linda McGovern; her son, George T. Applegate; as well as her | 5 | | sons-in-law, Terrance McGovern and Robert Bracken; therefore, | 6 | | be it
| 7 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL | 8 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | 9 | | her family and friends, the passing of Mary Ruth Applegate; and | 10 | | be it further
| 11 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 12 | | presented to the family of Mary Ruth Applegate as a symbol of | 13 | | our sincere sympathy.
