| 1 | | SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General | 3 | | Assembly pays honor and respect to those individuals who have | 4 | | given their lives in service to their communities; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, On May 19, 2021, at approximately 3:20 a.m., | 6 | | Champaign Police Officer Christopher Oberheim, badge number | 7 | | 703, was shot and killed while responding to a domestic | 8 | | disturbance call at an apartment complex in the 3200 block of | 9 | | North Neil Street; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Officer Oberheim was born in Decatur on October | 11 | | 31, 1976; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Officer Oberheim began his career in law | 13 | | enforcement at the Decatur Police Department in 2000, where he | 14 | | quickly became a respected officer who led by quiet example | 15 | | and maintained a sense of humility even when receiving | 16 | | recognition for his heroic actions; he always looked forward | 17 | | to playing in the annual PBPA State Softball Tournament and | 18 | | making memories with his fellow officers, whose friendships he | 19 | | treasured; and | 20 | | WHEREAS, Officer Oberheim transferred to the Champaign | 21 | | Police Department in 2008, where he continued to protect and |

| 1 | | serve his community; during his tenure, he received two Medals | 2 | | of Valor for his courageous acts of selfless bravery; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Officer Oberheim was not only a police officer | 4 | | but also a son, brother, husband, father, beloved coach, | 5 | | trusted friend, and respected leader; he valued his family as | 6 | | his first priority, and his four daughters were his absolute | 7 | | pride and joy; he will be remembered for being a devoted public | 8 | | servant, a family tradition further continued by his younger | 9 | | brother and his cousin, who both serve as Decatur police | 10 | | officers; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, At the time of his passing, Officer Oberheim was | 12 | | survived by his wife, Amber; his daughters, Hannah, Avery, | 13 | | Addison, and Aubree; his parents, Ted and Mary Ann Oberheim; | 14 | | his siblings, Greg (Michelle), Amy, Matt (Jennifer), Joe | 15 | | (Chelsea), and Sarah (Jason); his in-laws; and his nieces and | 16 | | nephews; therefore, be it
| 17 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | 18 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF | 19 | | REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the | 20 | | section of I-72 between Decatur and Champaign as the "Officer | 21 | | Oberheim Memorial Highway"; and be it further | 22 | | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation |

| 1 | | is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with | 2 | | State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs | 3 | | giving notice of the name "Officer Oberheim Memorial Highway"; | 4 | | and be it further
| 5 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | 6 | | presented to the family of Officer Oberheim and the Secretary | 7 | | of the Illinois Department of Transportation.
