| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Guy | 4 | | Anthony Renzaglia, who passed away on November 4, 2010; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Guy Renzaglia was a beloved father, grandfather, | 6 | | family member, friend, teacher, and colleague without compare, | 7 | | and a champion for those in need, with a legacy reaching across | 8 | | southern Illinois and to every corner of our great nation; and | 9 | | WHEREAS, Guy enlisted to serve his country during World War | 10 | | II, finished first in the Officer Candidate School in the Army | 11 | | Air Corps, and served with distinction during five years in | 12 | | uniform, and like many of his peers in the Greatest Generation, | 13 | | he returned home and attended college on the GI Bill; and | 14 | | WHEREAS, Guy, the son of Italian immigrants, was an | 15 | | accomplished athlete and scholar, a member of the George | 16 | | Washington University Hall of Fame, earned his Bachelor of Arts | 17 | | degree at George Washington University, and his Master's degree | 18 | | in physical education at the University of Minnesota; he | 19 | | subsequently earned his second Master's degree in psychology | 20 | | and his doctorate in counseling psychology; and | 21 | | WHEREAS, Guy had a vision to provide support to underserved |

| 1 | | persons and applied his determination and wisdom to develop the | 2 | | Rehabilitation Institute at Southern Illinois | 3 | | University-Carbondale, making it one of the few universities in | 4 | | the country at the time to provide services for the blind, | 5 | | deaf, and persons using wheelchairs; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Through his strength and charisma the | 7 | | Rehabilitation Institute became a nationally acclaimed program | 8 | | which trained more than 1,000 professionals in rehabilitation | 9 | | and mental health services; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Guy retired from 23 years of service to Southern | 11 | | Illinois University-Carbondale and at the age of 60 started a | 12 | | partnership with two friends, Ted Wichman and Skip Cosgrove, | 13 | | and began a vineyard and winery later known as Alto Vineyards; | 14 | | and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, People from across the globe have come to southern | 16 | | Illinois to sample the brilliant wines and warm hospitality of | 17 | | Alto Vineyards, seeing and tasting for themselves the labor of | 18 | | love which Guy passed along to his son Paul Renzaglia, a love | 19 | | for life and for people which is evident in every delicious | 20 | | sip; and | 21 | | WHEREAS, Alto Vineyards has served as the model for dozens | 22 | | of other wineries and as the birthplace of the wine industry in |

| 1 | | Illinois; the State now boasts some 90 working wineries and | 2 | | hundreds of acres of vineyards, bringing Illinois national | 3 | | respect as a wine producing region enjoyed by thousands of | 4 | | visitors each year; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Our hearts are heavy but we rejoice in the time | 6 | | Guy Renzaglia shared in our lives, we are comforted by the | 7 | | knowledge that Guy's memory will never leave the fertile and | 8 | | beautiful rolling hills of southern Illinois, and the wonderful | 9 | | people of this area and the Southern Illinois University | 10 | | community; therefore, be it
| 11 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 12 | | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 13 | | we mourn, along with his family, friends, and a grateful | 14 | | nation, the passing of Guy Renzaglia; and be it further
| 15 | | RESOLVED, That that a suitable copy of this resolution be | 16 | | presented to the family of Guy Renzaglia as a symbol of our | 17 | | sincere sympathy.
