| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 |
| Representatives are pleased to congratulate Sam Minkus of | 4 |
| Chicago on the occasion of his 100th birthday, March 9, 2009; | 5 |
| and
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, He was born March 9, 1909 in Zhitomer, Russia and | 7 |
| emigrated to Winnipeg, Canada in 1914; he came to Chicago in | 8 |
| 1920; and
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, He married Lillian Wein of Chicago in 1942; he was | 10 |
| a Private First Class in the United States Army, stationed in | 11 |
| El Paso,
Texas and Orlando, Florida during World War II; and
| 12 |
| WHEREAS, He taught Lightweight and Welterweight Champion | 13 |
| Barney Ross how to
fight; he refereed boxing matches at the | 14 |
| Chicago YMCA and Chicago Catholic League
basketball games when | 15 |
| legendary DePaul Blue Demon basketball coach Ray Meyer played; | 16 |
| and
| 17 |
| WHEREAS, He sold venetian blinds and opened up a small | 18 |
| factory on the
near north side of Chicago; he worked in the | 19 |
| luggage industry at Singer Better Built
Luggage and later | 20 |
| became the plant manager for Everwear Incorporated, the
| 21 |
| manufacturer of the original Trav-L-Bar from 1957 until 1984, |

| when he
retired at
the age of 75; and
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, He has lived on Winthrop Avenue, Glenwood Avenue, | 3 |
| and Winston Towers on
Kedzie Avenue in Chicago; he was an | 4 |
| active member of Congregation B’nai Zion in
Chicago; he played | 5 |
| golf until he was 90 and drove until he was 94; he will | 6 |
| celebrate with his children,
Paul and Sherry Minkus
and Loren | 7 |
| and Gayle Minkus; his grandchildren, Michelle, Jamie, Ellie, | 8 |
| and Aaron; and his great-grandchildren,
Lilly
and Lilah; | 9 |
| therefore, be it
| 10 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 11 |
| NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | 12 |
| congratulate Sam Minkus on his centennial birthday celebration | 13 |
| and wish him good health and fortune for the future; and be it | 14 |
| further
| 15 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 16 |
| presented to Sam Minkus as a symbol of our profound respect and | 17 |
| esteem.
