| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of James P. "Jim" Warfield of Urbana, who | 4 | | passed away on January 14, 2019; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Jim Warfield was born in Granite City to Vivian | 6 | | and Eldon Warfield; he attended the University of Illinois | 7 | | Urbana-Champaign, where he received many awards, including the | 8 | | Bronze Tablet; in 1963, during his junior year, he spent a | 9 | | summer in Chiapas, Mexico with Harvard Professor Evon Z. Vogt | 10 | | and studied local architecture; his writings and drawings from | 11 | | that summer became a chapter in Vogt's book, Zinacantan and in | 12 | | a Spanish book published by the Mexican government called Los | 13 | | Zinacantecos; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Jim Warfield married Rochelle "Chelle" Wilson in | 15 | | 1964; in the late 1960s, he and Chelle served in the United | 16 | | States Peace Corps in Bolivia, South America; he excelled in | 17 | | his first teaching position at the University of San Andres in | 18 | | La Paz, Bolivia during that time, and the experience led to his | 19 | | choice to teach when he returned to the United States; and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Jim Warfield was an architect and professor of | 21 | | architectural design at the school of Architecture, University | 22 | | of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; he taught architectural |

| 1 | | design and a chancellor's scholars course; he frequently led | 2 | | study-abroad trips to Mexico, Turkey, and Greece; his first | 3 | | trip to Shanghai, China established a summer program between | 4 | | Tongji University's architecture program and the architecture | 5 | | students at UIUC; he spent nine summers in China with students; | 6 | | in 2012, he was appointed advising professor of architecture at | 7 | | Tongji University, and he served in that position until his | 8 | | death; in 2013, he was appointed to the board of directors for | 9 | | several Chinese publications; in 2003, he was named professor | 10 | | emeritus at UIUC, and, even though he retired in 2003, he | 11 | | continued teaching through 2018; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Jim Warfield was awarded the prestigious Francis | 13 | | J. Plym Traveling Fellowship in 1971; he received the American | 14 | | Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) Distinguished | 15 | | Professor Award in 1997; as a professor at UIUC, he was | 16 | | recognized 53 times on the "List of Teachers Ranked as | 17 | | Excellent by Their Students"; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Jim Warfield's interest in vernacular | 19 | | architecture led to extensive world travel with his wife; he | 20 | | was an excellent photographer, and his photographs were | 21 | | exhibited on the UIUC campus and in Chicago, Scotland, Turkey, | 22 | | and China; and
| 23 | | WHEREAS, Jim Warfield was the author of seven books and |

| 1 | | many articles published in Chinese journals; in 2013, the | 2 | | Warfield Vernacular Architecture Archives were included as | 3 | | party of the library collection at Tongji University; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Jim Warfield was preceded in death by his parents | 5 | | and his daughter, Anna Martina McQuillan; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Jim Warfield is survived by his wife, Chelle; his | 7 | | children, Joseph Glennon Warfield, Mark Alan Warfield, and | 8 | | Christina Lee Fisher; his grandchildren, Brandon McQuillan, | 9 | | Gabriella Fisher, Ian Fisher, Sarah Warfield, Elisabeth | 10 | | Warfield, Peter Warfield, and Connor Fisher; and his brothers, | 11 | | Walter Harold Warfield and Eldon William Warfield; therefore, | 12 | | be it
| 13 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | 14 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 15 | | James P. "Jim" Warfield and extend our sincere condolences to | 16 | | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | 17 | | further
| 18 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 19 | | presented to the family of Jim Warfield as an expression of our | 20 | | deepest sympathy.
