| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 |
| learn of the death of
Virginia Metze of Oakwood, who passed | 4 |
| away on February 7, 2009; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Virginia Metze was born on February 8, 1934 in | 6 |
| Argenta; her parents were Ford Campbell and Grace (Campbell) | 7 |
| Phegley; she married Gernot Metze on July 13, 1962; and
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, Virginia Metze earned her Juris Doctor from the | 9 |
| University of Illinois in 1976; and
| 10 |
| WHEREAS, Virginia Metze was retired as the Director of the | 11 |
| Computer Center at the Materials Research Laboratory at the | 12 |
| University of Illinois; and
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, Virginia Metze was an active member of her | 14 |
| community; she supported numerous causes, including the | 15 |
| University of Illinois Law School, the American Constitutional | 16 |
| Society, the ACLU, Common Cause, the Bill of Rights Defense | 17 |
| Committee, the Americans United for Separation of Church and | 18 |
| State, the Human Society of the United States, the ASPCA, the | 19 |
| Union of Concerned Scientists, Amnesty International, NARAL, | 20 |
| the Nature Conservancy, the Sierra Club, the Wilderness | 21 |
| Society, and Eco Partners, among many others; and

| WHEREAS, Virginia Metze enjoyed politics, computers, cats | 2 |
| and dogs, cooking, reading, beading, knitting, and weaving; she | 3 |
| also desired to write a mystery novel set in a university | 4 |
| laboratory; therefore, be it
| 5 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | 6 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | 7 |
| her family and friends, the passing of Virginia Metze; and be | 8 |
| it further
| 9 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 10 |
| presented to the family of Virginia Metze as an expression of | 11 |
| our sympathy.
