| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The State of Illinois is committed to recognizing | 3 | | that our growth and strength depend on
the safety and economic | 4 | | value of the homes, buildings, and infrastructure that serve | 5 | | our citizens, both in
everyday life and in times of natural | 6 | | disaster; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Our confidence in the structural integrity of | 8 | | these buildings that make up our communities is achieved
| 9 | | through the devotion of vigilant guardians, building safety and | 10 | | fire prevention officials, architects, engineers,
builders, | 11 | | tradespeople, design professionals, laborers, and others in | 12 | | the construction industry who work
year-round to ensure the | 13 | | safe construction of buildings; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, These guardians are dedicated members of the | 15 | | International Code Council, a United States-based
organization | 16 | | that brings together local, state, and federal officials who | 17 | | are experts in the built environment, to
create and implement | 18 | | the highest-quality codes to protect us in the buildings where | 19 | | we live, learn, work,
worship, and play; and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Our nation benefits economically and | 21 | | technologically from the International Codes that are
| 22 | | developed by national, voluntary consensus codes; with a |

| 1 | | standard-developing organization our government
is able to | 2 | | avoid the high costs and complexity of developing and | 3 | | maintaining these codes, which are the most
widely adopted | 4 | | building safety and fire prevention codes in the nation; these | 5 | | modern building codes include
safeguards to protect the public | 6 | | from natural disasters such as hurricanes, snowstorms, | 7 | | tornadoes, fires and wildfires, floods, and earthquakes; and | 8 | | WHEREAS, Building Safety Month is sponsored by the | 9 | | International Code Council to remind the public about the
| 10 | | critical role of the largely unknown guardians of community and | 11 | | public safety, the local code officials, who
assure safe, | 12 | | efficient, and livable buildings which are essential to keeping | 13 | | America great; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, "Code Officials-Partners in Community Safety and | 15 | | Economic Growth", is the theme for Building
Safety Month 2017; | 16 | | it encourages all Americans to raise awareness of the | 17 | | importance of building safe and
resilient construction, fire | 18 | | prevention, disaster mitigation, and new technologies in the | 19 | | construction industry;
Building Safety Month 2017 encourages | 20 | | appropriate steps that everyone can take to ensure that the | 21 | | places where
we live, learn, work, worship, and play are safe, | 22 | | and recognizes that countless lives have been saved due to the
| 23 | | implementation of safety codes by local and state agencies; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Each year, in observance of Building Safety Month, | 2 | | Americans are asked to consider the
commitment to improve | 3 | | building safety and economic investment at home and in the | 4 | | community, and to
acknowledge the essential service provided to | 5 | | all of us by local and state building departments, fire
| 6 | | prevention bureaus, and federal agencies in protecting lives | 7 | | and property; therefore, be it
| 8 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 9 | | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | 10 | | declare the month of May
of 2017 as "Building Safety Month" in | 11 | | the State of Illinois and encourage our citizens to join with | 12 | | their communities in
participation in Building Safety Month | 13 | | activities; and be it further
| 14 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 15 | | presented to the International Code Council as an expression of | 16 | | our respect and esteem.
