| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, State Representative Monique D. Davis and the | 3 |
| members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to | 4 |
| congratulate Marjorie Mae Dutton Perry on the occasion of her | 5 |
| 100th birthday; and
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, The first child of Ralpheal and Virginia Dutton, | 7 |
| was born on November 10, 1908 in Patterson, Louisiana; her | 8 |
| father, Ralpheal, worked in the saw mill in Patterson and later | 9 |
| the sugar mill in Franklin, Louisiana; her mother, Virginia, | 10 |
| was a housewife who took care of Marjorie, her sister, and four | 11 |
| brothers; and

| WHEREAS, The Dutton home was one of love, togetherness, and | 13 |
| prayer; as a family, her father insisted that the family sit | 14 |
| down to supper together after he got home from work; they had a | 15 |
| long wooden table that would seat the whole family; the family | 16 |
| also prayed together every night before they went to bed; the | 17 |
| Dutton family always attended Sunday School, and Marjorie Mae | 18 |
| was smart even then; as a very young child, she memorized the | 19 |
| 23rd Psalm; her father was so proud of her that he would have | 20 |
| her recite it often for everyone who came to visit; and

| WHEREAS, Marjorie Mae attended Dunbar and Bruce Elementary | 22 |
| School in Huston, Texas; she then moved back to Louisiana to |

| attend New Orleans University; while majoring in English | 2 |
| Literature at New Orleans University she wrote a poem entitled, | 3 |
| "Africa, My Native Country"; her poem won second prize in the | 4 |
| English Literature Contest; and

| WHEREAS, While the Dutton children were growing up, the | 6 |
| girls would play cooking and the boys would play ball, and | 7 |
| shoot marbles to entertain themselves; they didn't have video | 8 |
| games, television, or computers; later, as a young woman, | 9 |
| Marjorie Mae Dutton met Forrest Perry and they were married in | 10 |
| 1927; to this union, three children were born, Raymond T. | 11 |
| Perry, Forrest Mae Perry, and LaRone T. Perry; and
| 12 |
| WHEREAS, Marjorie Mae, like her mother before her, did not | 13 |
| work outside the home; she chose instead to guide her children | 14 |
| in Christian ethics; she taught them to obey adults, respect | 15 |
| their elders, and pray every day; she has always let her light | 16 |
| shine; after accepting Christ and being baptized at the age of | 17 |
| nine, she has continued her Christian journey throughout her | 18 |
| life; and | 19 |
| WHEREAS, As one of the original members of Mt. Ararat | 20 |
| Missionary Baptist Church she was an invaluable asset over the | 21 |
| years; she was Sunday School teacher of the Beginners Class for | 22 |
| over thirty years; she served as President of the Mission | 23 |
| Society at Mt. Ararat and 2nd Vice President of the Missionary |

| Society with the Independent Missionary Baptist Association of | 2 |
| Texas; in later years she also served as the Coordinator of the | 3 |
| Mission, overseeing the Senior Mission, the Junior Mission, and | 4 |
| the Youth Auxiliaries; she also sang in the Senior Choir as a | 5 |
| soprano until 1990; and | 6 |
| WHEREAS, Forrest and Marjorie Perry often traveled by car | 7 |
| during segregation; when they went north to Chicago they were | 8 |
| able to eat in the restaurants, but when they traveled in the | 9 |
| South they were turned away from most restaurants and were also | 10 |
| denied lodging at motels; there were times when they had to | 11 |
| sleep in their car, even after segregation they would sit in | 12 |
| restaurants for a long time and still not be served; although | 13 |
| Marjorie Mae Dutton Perry was not involved in the civil rights | 14 |
| movement, she did her part by encouraging others to vote and by | 15 |
| being a precinct worker at the polls; and | 16 |
| WHEREAS, She was a loving and dedicated wife to Forrest | 17 |
| Perry for 53 years when he left to be with his Heavenly Father; | 18 |
| she has six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one | 19 |
| great-great-grandchild; therefore, be it
| 20 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 21 |
| NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | 22 |
| congratulate Marjorie Mae Dutton Perry on this momentous | 23 |
| occasion and wish her the best for years to come; and be it |
