| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 |
| Representatives are pleased to congratulate Charlie Kim on the | 4 |
| occasion of becoming a United States citizen on January 6, | 5 |
| 2009; and
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, Charlie Kim was born in Korea in 1939; he has | 7 |
| lived in the United States for 35 years; and
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, Charlie Kim has bore witness to the Japanese | 9 |
| occupation of Korea, the end of World War II, and the Korean | 10 |
| War; during the Korean War, his family fled to the south to | 11 |
| escape Russian occupation; from 1959 to 1962, he served in the | 12 |
| Marine Corps for the Republic of Korea (ROK); he is currently a | 13 |
| member of the 1st Marine Division Association and was awarded | 14 |
| honorary general status in the Marine Corps in 2008; and
| 15 |
| WHEREAS, Charlie Kim is fluent in German; he has performed | 16 |
| German and Russian translations at the National War College and | 17 |
| often visits the German town in Chicago to talk with various | 18 |
| German Americans; and
| 19 |
| WHEREAS, Charlie Kim has published two books in Korean, | 20 |
| including volume 1 of a 12-volume history on the Battle of | 21 |
| Stalingrad and a history on Genghis Khan; and

| WHEREAS, Charlie Kim believes in serving the less | 2 |
| fortunate; for 5 years, he, along with other Lions Club | 3 |
| members, volunteered once a month at the Lincoln Park Community | 4 |
| Shelter by providing haircuts, medical help, and food; and | 5 |
| WHEREAS, Charlie Kim was the founder of the Chicago Tae-sup | 6 |
| Lions Club in October of 2004; and
| 7 |
| WHEREAS, Charlie Kim married Boon Ok Kim in 1970; his wife | 8 |
| is currently studying to become a U.S. citizen; together, they | 9 |
| have a son, Ki Won Kim, and a daughter, Jun Sook Kim; | 10 |
| therefore, be it
| 11 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 12 |
| NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | 13 |
| congratulate Charlie Kim on the occasion of becoming a United | 14 |
| States citizen and wish him success and happiness in his future | 15 |
| endeavors; and be it further

| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 17 |
| presented to Charlie Kim as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
