| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, As many as 32 million Americans have food | 3 | | allergies, which includes nearly six million children under | 4 | | the age of 18; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Research shows that the prevalence of food | 6 | | allergy is increasing among children and adults; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Nine foods cause the majority of all food allergy | 8 | | reactions in the U.S., including shellfish, fish, milk, eggs, | 9 | | tree nuts, peanuts, soy, wheat, and sesame; symptoms of a food | 10 | | allergy reaction can range from mild to severe, including | 11 | | anaphylaxis, which has a rapid onset and may cause death; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Food allergy results in more than 200,000 U.S. | 13 | | emergency room visits each year; reactions typically occur | 14 | | when an individual unknowingly eats a food containing an | 15 | | ingredient to which they are allergic; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, The number of food allergy reactions requiring | 17 | | emergency treatment is up sharply over the past decade with a | 18 | | 377 percent rise in insurance claim lines with diagnoses of | 19 | | anaphylactic food reactions between 2007 and 2016; and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education) is a |

| 1 | | national, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the | 2 | | quality of life and the health of individuals with food | 3 | | allergies and to providing them hope through the promise of | 4 | | new treatments; therefore, be it
| 5 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 6 | | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 7 | | we declare the week of May 9 through 15, 2021 as Food Allergy | 8 | | Awareness Week in the State of Illinois; and be it further
| 9 | | RESOLVED, That we encourage the residents of Illinois to | 10 | | increase their understanding and awareness of food allergies | 11 | | and anaphylaxis.
