| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate Gerald W. "Jerry" | 4 | | Adelmann on the occasion of his retirement from serving as | 5 | | head of the environmental conservation organization Openlands; | 6 | | and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Gerald Adelmann received undergraduate and | 8 | | graduate degrees at Georgetown University and George | 9 | | Washington University; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Gerald Adelmann joined Openlands in 1980 to | 11 | | coordinate a special program that led to the creation of the | 12 | | Illinois and Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor, the | 13 | | first federal land designation of its kind; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Inspired by this model, Gerald Adelmann launched | 15 | | the Canal Corridor Association in 1982 to work within the | 16 | | heritage corridor; and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, In 1988, Gerald Adelmann was appointed as head of | 18 | | Openlands; under his guidance, Openlands launched the 21st | 19 | | Century Open Space Plan, which called for expanded parklands, | 20 | | greenways, and trails in northeastern Illinois and the | 21 | | surrounding region; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Gerald Adelmann played an instrumental role in | 2 | | establishing the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie and formed | 3 | | conservation partnerships across the region; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Gerald Adelmann has been involved in conservation | 5 | | and historic preservation projects in China since the early | 6 | | 1990s; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Since 2008, Gerald Adelmann has served as an | 8 | | international advisor to the Yangon Heritage Trust in Myanmar, | 9 | | advising on regional planning and sustainable development; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Gerald Adelmann lectures extensively throughout | 11 | | the United States and abroad; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Gerald Adelmann is the vice chair of the Center | 13 | | for Humans and Nature and an emeritus member of the National | 14 | | Board of Advisors of the National Trust for Historic | 15 | | Preservation; he also chairs the City of Chicago's Nature and | 16 | | Wildlife Committee and is a member of several other boards and | 17 | | commissions; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Gerald Adelmann's conservation and preservation | 19 | | work has earned him prestigious accolades, including the | 20 | | Hutchinson Medal from the Chicago Botanic Garden in 2012 and |

| 1 | | an honorary doctorate from Lewis University; he is also an | 2 | | honorary member of the American Association of Landscape | 3 | | Architects; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Gerald Adelmann has managed to save large swaths | 5 | | of the local landscape for future generations; therefore, be | 6 | | it
| 7 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 8 | | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 9 | | we congratulate Gerald W. "Jerry" Adelmann on the occasion of | 10 | | his retirement from serving as president and CEO of the | 11 | | environmental conservation organization Openlands; and be it | 12 | | further
| 13 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 14 | | presented to Gerald Adelmann as a symbol of our esteem and | 15 | | respect.
