| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of George | 4 | | Miller Burditt Jr. of LaGrange Park, former Illinois State | 5 | | Representative, who passed away on March 12, 2013; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, George Burditt Jr. was born on Chicago's west | 7 | | side; he grew up in LaGrange and was valedictorian of the class | 8 | | of 1940 at Lyons Township High School; he played basketball and | 9 | | was later elected to the school's hall of fame and the Illinois | 10 | | Basketball Hall of Fame; he received a bachelor's degree from | 11 | | Harvard, where he was also on the basketball team, while | 12 | | serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1944; after the war, he | 13 | | obtained his law degree from Harvard; he married Barbara | 14 | | Stenger in 1945; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, George Burditt Jr. worked for Swift & Co. and in | 16 | | 1969 started the law firm of Burditt & Calkins, which focused | 17 | | on food and drug law; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, George Burditt Jr. was an attorney, former | 19 | | president of the Chicago Bar Association, general counsel for | 20 | | the Food and Drug Law Institute, and a longtime adjunct | 21 | | professor in food and drug law at Northwestern University's law | 22 | | school from 1967-1997; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, George Burditt Jr. got involved in politics in the | 2 | | 1950s after moving to Western Springs; he was on the village | 3 | | plan commission, became a campaign manager for the Lyons | 4 | | Township Republican organization, and was vice-chairman of a | 5 | | group of Dwight Eisenhower supporters; he served as an Illinois | 6 | | State Representative in the 1960s and 1970s, serving 4 terms | 7 | | and achieving the level of assistant majority leader; after | 8 | | leaving the Illinois House of Representatives, he was appointed | 9 | | to the State ethics board and to the Illinois Liquor Control | 10 | | Commission; in March 1974, he was elected as Lyons Township GOP | 11 | | committeeman; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, George Burditt Jr. was preceded in death by his | 13 | | first wife, Barbara, who died in 2001; and | 14 | | WHEREAS, George Burditt Jr. is survived by his second wife, | 15 | | Mary Jane Mallery, whom he married in 2008; his daughters | 16 | | Barbara Perry, Betsey Blessing, and Deborah; his son, George M. | 17 | | III; his 11 grandchildren; and his 6 great-grandchildren; | 18 | | therefore, be it
| 19 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 20 | | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 21 | | we mourn the passing of George Burditt Jr., and extend our | 22 | | sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew |
