| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) causes children | 3 | | to have extreme difficulty in planning
and producing the | 4 | | precise, highly-refined, and specific series of movements of | 5 | | the
tongue, lips, jaw, and palate that are necessary for the | 6 | | production of proper speech; it is one of the most severe | 7 | | speech and communication problems in children; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Every
child should be afforded his or her best | 9 | | opportunity to develop his or her speech, and with early
| 10 | | intervention and appropriate therapy, most children with CAS | 11 | | will learn to communicate
with their very own voices; while
the | 12 | | act of learning to speak comes effortlessly to most children, | 13 | | those with apraxia
require years of intensive speech therapy | 14 | | and face a lengthy struggle to learn to communicate, and | 15 | | although not life-threatening, the disorder is life-altering | 16 | | as families are left to cope with
the emotional, physical, and | 17 | | financial challenges of having a child diagnosed with CAS; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, The Apraxia Connection and Silent Stars | 19 | | Foundation, along with
the national organization, the | 20 | | Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America, are
| 21 | | part of a local, State, and national effort to bring awareness | 22 | | to CAS, and are
speaking up for children who do not have a | 23 | | voice; and
