| 2 | | WHEREAS, The Medal of Honor is the highest U.S. military | 3 | | decoration
awarded by Congress to a member of the Armed Forces | 4 | | for gallantry and
bravery in combat at the risk of life above | 5 | | and beyond the call of duty; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Over the last 20 years, the Medal of Honor | 7 | | Foundation has created and
launched education, recognition, | 8 | | and outreach programs about the values embodied in the Medal of | 9 | | Honor that have inspired millions of Americans, the values of
| 10 | | courage and sacrifice, commitment and integrity, and | 11 | | citizenship and patriotism; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Lester Crown and the Crown Family will be | 13 | | presented the
Distinguished Service Award at the Salute to the | 14 | | Medal of Honor Gala
celebration at the Union League Club of | 15 | | Chicago this year; and | 16 | | WHEREAS, The Distinguished Service Award is presented to | 17 | | exceptional
Americans who exemplify leadership and service and | 18 | | inspire others by
selflessly giving of time and talent to the | 19 | | community and nation; and | 20 | | WHEREAS, Over the next 20 years, the Medal of Honor | 21 | | Foundation will focus on preserving
the legacy of the Medal of |

| 1 | | Honor and the true American heroes who wear
it; and | 2 | | WHEREAS, There are only 70 living recipients of the Medal | 3 | | of Honor; Illinois has had 106 Medal of Honor recipients since | 4 | | the Civil War; and | 5 | | WHEREAS, These men are bound together by the Medal of Honor | 6 | | they wear and by
the shared passion to perpetuate its legacy of | 7 | | courage, sacrifice, and
selfless service; and | 8 | | WHEREAS, With a sharp focus on young Americans, the Medal | 9 | | of Honor Foundation
supports a broad range of initiatives to | 10 | | educate and inspire Americans to
perpetuate and preserve the | 11 | | legacy of the Medal
of Honor; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, The Medal of Honor Foundation will be in Chicago | 13 | | to celebrate
their 20th anniversary and honor Chicago with over | 14 | | 20 Medal of Honor
recipients visiting Chicago Public Schools | 15 | | and VA homes; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, On June 7, 2019, the Salute to the Medal of Honor | 17 | | Gala
will celebrate the legacy of the Medal of Honor, those who | 18 | | received
the Medal in honor of their bravery and courage on | 19 | | behalf of the United States
of America; therefore, be it

| 1 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare June 7,
2019 | 2 | | as Medal of Honor Day in Illinois; and be it further
| 3 | | RESOLVED, That this day presents an opportunity for adults | 4 | | and children to
research the history of the Medal of Honor and | 5 | | help promote its legacy, which includes courage and sacrifice, | 6 | | commitment and integrity,
and citizenship and patriotism to our | 7 | | country, our State and our communities
and to personally | 8 | | recognize those who have served or currently serve in
any | 9 | | branch of the Armed Forces, Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, and | 10 | | Coast
Guard, and thank them for their service.
