| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate were saddened | 3 |
| to learn of the death of Minister Derrick Voncell Jackson on | 4 |
| Thursday, September 15, 2005; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Derrick Jackson was born in St. Louis, Missouri on | 6 |
| February 27, 1952 to Mrs. Nannilee Jackson Mackey and was | 7 |
| raised in East St. Louis, Illinois; and
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, At 6 years of age, Derrick Jackson accepted Christ | 9 |
| as his personal Savior and Lord at the Mount Pisgah Missionary | 10 |
| Baptist Church and was baptized by his grandfather, Reverend | 11 |
| Robert B. Lyles; he was very active in the church, where he | 12 |
| served as president of the Junior Usher Board and music | 13 |
| director of the Junior and Senior Male Choruses and was a | 14 |
| member of the Young Adult Choir, the Sunday School, and the | 15 |
| Baptist Training Union; and
| 16 |
| WHEREAS, Derrick Jackson graduated from East St. Louis | 17 |
| Senior High School in June of 1970; after graduation, he worked | 18 |
| as a driver for District #189 Media Center and then trained as | 19 |
| a police cadet; in 1973, he was appointed police officer for | 20 |
| the City of East St. Louis; in 1976, he began a 29-year career | 21 |
| in tractor-trailer operations, and subsequently relocated to | 22 |
| Phoenix, Arizona, where he attended Arizona College of the | 23 |
| Bible and earned dual bachelor's degrees in elementary | 24 |
| education and bible studies; and

| WHEREAS, Derrick Jackson accepted God's call to the | 26 |
| preaching ministry at the Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist | 27 |
| Church, and was licensed to preach on November 11, 1981; He was | 28 |
| ordained on December 30, 1990 at the Ebenezer Missionary | 29 |
| Baptist Church, where he served several years as Associate | 30 |
| Minister and Director of Evangelism; Derrick Jackson excelled | 31 |
| in the area of evangelism and continuously sought opportunities |

| to share the gospel of Christ, either in the church or while | 2 |
| driving his truck; and | 3 |
| WHEREAS, Derrick Jackson and Geni Vernia Bellamy Farmer | 4 |
| were united in holy matrimony on August 2, 1982; he and his | 5 |
| wife returned to East St. Louis, where he became the Pastor of | 6 |
| Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church; he later became a | 7 |
| member of the Unity Lutheran Church, where he was a member | 8 |
| until his death; and
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, The passing of Minister Derrick Voncell Jackson | 10 |
| has been deeply felt by many, especially his wife, Geni V. | 11 |
| Jackson; his stepfather, William Mackey; his daughters, Lisa | 12 |
| Jackson, Pamela (Michael) Jones, Antoinette (Reverend Terry) | 13 |
| Marks; his sons, Eric (Cametha) Collins, Derrick (Theresa) | 14 |
| Jackson, Jr., and Darrell Farmer; his sisters, Faye Poe, Rosie | 15 |
| (Dale) Atkins, and Lucretia McAdoo; his brothers, Robert | 16 |
| Jackson, Reverend Ambrose (Lorraine) Jackson, Larry (Debra) | 17 |
| Anderson, William (Tracy) Anderson, and Curtis (Paula) | 18 |
| Anderson; his sisters-in-law, Marion (Reverend Wesley) Jones, | 19 |
| Charlee (Richard) Johnson, and Bernice Bellamy (Nino Fennoy); | 20 |
| his brother-in-law, Jesse Bryant, Jr.; his aunt, Irene Pounds; | 21 |
| his 8 grandchildren; his nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many | 22 |
| other relatives and friends; therefore, be it
| 23 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL | 24 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 25 |
| Minister Derrick Voncell Jackson, and we extend our sincere | 26 |
| condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | 27 |
| him; and be it further
| 28 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 29 |
| presented to his family as an expression of our deepest | 30 |
| sympathy.
