| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the Aurora Area Branch of | 4 | | the American Association of University Women (AAUW) on the | 5 | | occasion of their 100th anniversary; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Founded in 1881, the AAUW is the nation's most | 7 | | active and diverse organization for college graduates; it is | 8 | | the oldest and largest national organization working for | 9 | | equality and the advancement of women through education; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, The AAUW works to address the barriers and | 11 | | implicit biases in education that hinder the advancement of | 12 | | women, to ensure livelihoods for women by creating inclusive | 13 | | career pathways to attain economic security, and to close the | 14 | | gender gap in leadership opportunities by cultivating women | 15 | | leaders; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, The Aurora Area Branch was founded in 1919 and has | 17 | | approximately 60 members; among their achievements is the | 18 | | effort to elect women to local offices, beginning in the 1950s | 19 | | when Elaine Hegy, the former branch president, was the first | 20 | | woman elected to the local school board; many of the Branch's | 21 | | members have run for public office, including State Senator | 22 | | Linda Homes, State Representative Stephanie Kifowit, former |

| 1 | | State Representative Linda Chapa-LaVia, and former State | 2 | | Representative Suzanne Deuchler; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, The Aurora Area Branch's other achievements | 4 | | include being selected as a finalist for AAUW's Breaking | 5 | | Through Barriers Award for its "Science Spooktacular" program | 6 | | for girls in 2011 and being the home branch of Andi Danis, the | 7 | | 2013-2014 Illinois State President; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, A graduate with an associate's degree or the | 9 | | equivalent, a baccalaureate, or a higher degree from a | 10 | | qualified educational institution is eligible to join the AAUW; | 11 | | members of the Aurora Area Branch join 100,000 members | 12 | | nationwide with a long-standing commitment to advocacy for | 13 | | women; therefore, be it
| 14 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 15 | | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 16 | | we congratulate the Aurora Branch of AAUW on the occasion of | 17 | | their 100th anniversary and commend them for examining and | 18 | | taking positions on the fundamental issues of the day and on | 19 | | promoting equity and education for women and girls; and be it | 20 | | further
