| 1 | | SENATE RESOLUTION | 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | 3 | | to learn of the death of Jesse Lee Fleming of Chicago, who | 4 | | passed away on August 27, 2023; and | 5 | | WHEREAS, Jesse Lee Fleming was born to W.T. and Beatrice | 6 | | Fleming in Chicago on March 11, 1947; he committed to his faith | 7 | | as a young adult and was baptized at St. Matthew Missionary | 8 | | Baptist Church; he graduated from Zenos Colman Elementary | 9 | | School in 1963 and Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable High School in | 10 | | 1967, where he played trumpet, piano, and guitar, performed in | 11 | | the orchestra and booster band, and participated in the | 12 | | Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) and the Senior Club; | 13 | | he attended Wilson Junior College, known today as Kennedy-King | 14 | | Community College; and | 15 | | WHEREAS, Jesse Lee Fleming was an accomplished musician; | 16 | | he played for the Midwest Philharmonic Orchestra for several | 17 | | years and for numerous bands, leading him to travel across the | 18 | | Midwest and the South; he toured with the Grand Express Band | 19 | | and traveled the entire country; he was a resident musician in | 20 | | Las Vegas for many years, and he also worked as a movie extra | 21 | | in Hollywood, California; and | 22 | | WHEREAS, Jesse Lee Fleming returned to Chicago after |

| 1 | | touring in 1982; he gave private music lessons on the guitar | 2 | | and trumpet for a while, which he ended due to his students' | 3 | | lack of seriousness; he worked for the U.S. Postal Service | 4 | | from 1991 until his retirement in 2016; and | 5 | | WHEREAS, Jesse Lee Fleming preferred staying home and | 6 | | living a quiet life in retirement; he enjoyed watching Chicago | 7 | | Cubs games and old western television shows, including | 8 | | Gunsmoke, Bonanza, and Have Gun - Will Travel; he especially | 9 | | enjoyed the western movies The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance | 10 | | and Winchester '73; he loved being on social media and posting | 11 | | on Facebook; he also loved listening to music of all genres, | 12 | | including rhythm & blues, gospel, soul, pop, jazz, and | 13 | | classical; and | 14 | | WHEREAS, Jesse Lee Fleming was a skilled chess player, a | 15 | | devoted Chicago Cubs fan, and an avid reader; he will be | 16 | | remembered for being an intelligent and outgoing person; and | 17 | | WHEREAS, Jesse Lee Fleming was preceded in death by his | 18 | | parents and his sister, Cansady Fleming; and | 19 | | WHEREAS, Jesse Lee Fleming is survived by his sisters, | 20 | | Beatrice A. Haney, Mary L. Fleming, and Amy L. Fleming; his | 21 | | brother, Terry L. Fleming; his aunt, Mattie Allen; his niece, | 22 | | Mia K. Fleming; his nephews, Derrick K. Fleming Sr., TiJuan L. |
