| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 |
| learn of the death of
Samuel Gilliams, Jr., who passed away on | 4 |
| November 27, 2009; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Samuel Gilliams, Jr. was born on January 10, 1929, | 6 |
| in Jonestown, Mississippi; his parents were Samuel and Edna | 7 |
| Gilliams; he met and married Magnolia Spruille in 1957; and
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, Samuel Gilliams, Jr. moved to Chicago at an early | 9 |
| age; after moving, he attended Wendell Phillips Public School; | 10 |
| and
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, Samuel Gilliams, Jr. served his country with pride | 12 |
| and distinction as a member of the United States Army during | 13 |
| the Korean War; he was honorably discharged from the Army in | 14 |
| 1953; and
| 15 |
| WHEREAS, Samuel Gilliams, Jr. was employed at Namsco, Inc. | 16 |
| for 17 years; he went on to work for Eastern Airlines, where he | 17 |
| retired in 1987 after 17 years of service; and
| 18 |
| WHEREAS, Samuel Gilliams, Jr. was a loyal member of Group | 19 |
| No. 3 of the New Friendship Missionary Baptist Church under the | 20 |
| leadership of Rev. Dr. Edwin Simmons, whom he loved dearly; he |

| was particularly proud of his service as Co-Chairperson of the | 2 |
| church's 63rd and the pastor's 27th anniversary celebration in | 3 |
| 2009; and | 4 |
| WHEREAS, Samuel Gilliams, Jr. is survived by his loving | 5 |
| wife of 52 years, Magnolia; his daughters, Sharon D. Smith and | 6 |
| Diedre Matthews (fiance, Clarence); his son, Sidney (Julie); | 7 |
| his granddaughter, Kyla Matthews; his sister, Willa Neely | 8 |
| (Dalandis Sr.); his uncles, Tommie Lyles and Robert Lyles Sr. | 9 |
| (Janie); and his many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends; | 10 |
| therefore, be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | 12 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | 13 |
| his family and friends, the passing of Samuel Gilliams, Jr.; | 14 |
| and be it further
| 15 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 16 |
| presented to the family of Samuel Gilliams, Jr. as an | 17 |
| expression of our sympathy.
