| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Harriet McLaughlin Rose of Mahomet, who | 4 | | passed away on August 5, 2019; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Harriet Rose was born in Sparta to Harry and Nina | 6 | | (Lindsay) McLaughlin on February 23, 1934; she attended Sparta | 7 | | High School, where she was a cheerleader and a member of the | 8 | | band and was nominated to the homecoming court as a freshman; | 9 | | her family moved to Fairfield, where she finished high school | 10 | | and was in the band and was the cheerleading captain; she was | 11 | | also awarded the 4-H Outstanding Member Award for the State of | 12 | | Illinois, which earned her a trip to the national 4-H | 13 | | convention; she was instrumental in creating the Fairfield | 14 | | water safety life guard program that still continues; she | 15 | | attended the University of Illinois, where she was a member of | 16 | | the Pi Beta Phi sorority, was on the women's synchronized | 17 | | swimming team, and was nominated for homecoming queen as a | 18 | | freshman; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Harriet Rose began a career in higher education at | 20 | | the University of Michigan; she then became the assistant to | 21 | | the dean of MacMurray College in Jacksonville, a post she held | 22 | | for almost half of her career; in Jacksonville, she also | 23 | | developed a lifelong passion for tennis and was known to drop |

| 1 | | everything to watch a grand slam final; and
| 2 | | WHEREAS, As a single mom, Harriet Rose returned to school | 3 | | and completed a bachelor's degree from the University of | 4 | | Illinois Springfield and a master's degree in business | 5 | | administration; in 1986, she began working as an administrative | 6 | | director at Eastern Illinois University, where she retired in | 7 | | 2002; during her Charleston years, she was a proud member of | 8 | | the OBS ladies club, taught adjunct business classes at Lake | 9 | | Land College, and was a member of First Presbyterian Church; | 10 | | and | 11 | | WHEREAS, Harriet Rose was knowledgeable about classical | 12 | | French antiques and had a keen eye for decorating and for all | 13 | | things fashion; she loved the arts, particularly art museums | 14 | | and Broadway shows; her other passion was anything related to | 15 | | the news and current events; she was a lifelong Republican and | 16 | | chair of the Republican Women's Club of Morgan County during | 17 | | the Cold War; she traveled extensively during this time period | 18 | | of her life, including a trip to Russia as a guest of the | 19 | | Deputy U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union; and | 20 | | WHEREAS, In retirement, Harriet Rose enjoyed attending the | 21 | | U of I Osher Lifelong Learning Institute's classes on current | 22 | | events and writing, which led to her composing a book for her | 23 | | family, My Southern Illinois Heritage. | 1 | | many Illinois Alumni Association and Eastern Illinois work | 2 | | alumni events; she loved and very much enjoyed her | 3 | | grandchildren, to whom she will forever be known as "HaHa"; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Harriet Rose was preceded in death by her parents | 5 | | and her sister, Nellie Wineland; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Harriet Rose is survived by her son, Illinois | 7 | | State Senator Chapin (Camille) Rose; her grandchildren, Jack, | 8 | | Annie, Kira, and Grace; her sister, Mabelle Wexler; her | 9 | | brother-in-law, Gene Wineland; her nephews, Tom (Audrey) | 10 | | Wineland and Tom Hirte; her niece, Stacy Given; and numerous | 11 | | other extended family members; therefore, be it
| 12 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | 13 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 14 | | Harriet McLaughlin Rose and extend our sincere condolences to | 15 | | her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | 16 | | further
| 17 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 18 | | presented to the family of Harriet Rose as an expression of our | 19 | | deepest sympathy.
