| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the
death of Dr. | 4 | | Stanley Zydlo of Inverness, who passed away on June 3, 2015 at | 5 | | the age of 81; and | 6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Zydlo was
born on December 15, 1933; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Zydlo was married to his beloved wife, Joyce | 8 | | Reid, with their loving
children, Mark, Sheri, Matt (Jennifer), | 9 | | Brad, Kate, and the late Kristi, the late Scott, and the late
| 10 | | Josh; he was the proud grandfather of Rikki Ghilardi, Logan | 11 | | Young, Gage Person, and Jean, Dane, Jase, and Kayla Zydlo; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Zydlo was a former Major in the United States | 13 | | Air Force, Strategic Air
Command; he left the Air Force in 1963 | 14 | | to practice medicine in Wabash, Indiana; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, In 1969, Dr. Zydlo moved to Chicago and joined the | 16 | | emergency room staff
at Northwestern Community Hospital; and | 17 | | WHEREAS, After looking at the mobile intensive care units | 18 | | for cardiac patients that
were starting to be used, Dr. Zydlo | 19 | | thought the idea could be expanded to other types of emergency

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Zydlo organized a meeting of northwest | 2 | | suburban fire departments to propose
the idea of training and | 3 | | certifying firefighters in emergency medicine; he knew the | 4 | | first
6 minutes were the most crucial for someone suffering a | 5 | | heart attack; and | 6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Zydlo was able to begin developing a | 7 | | first-of-its-kind
paramedic program in the United States; when | 8 | | he first went to the fire departments, the chiefs
believed in | 9 | | this program and how it could potentially lead to saving | 10 | | thousands of lives; and | 11 | | WHEREAS, When Dr. Zydlo first started spreading his vision | 12 | | within the emergency medical
service community, it met | 13 | | resistance; some felt that firefighters could not be properly | 14 | | trained to
provide emergency medical care; and | 15 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Zydlo would not be deterred from his vision; | 16 | | he persisted teaching many
of the paramedic courses himself, | 17 | | and in time, he was overseeing all medical deliveries by member
| 18 | | agencies and municipalities; and | 19 | | WHEREAS, In 1972, Northwest Community Hospital launched | 20 | | its Mobile Intensive Care System (MICS), with the help of Dr. | 21 | | Zydlo; the MICS served 9 communities in the northwest suburbs - |

| 1 | | Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect, Buffalo Grove, Lake Zurich, | 2 | | Wheeling, Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Palatine, and Rolling | 3 | | Meadows, and today this emergency medical services system | 4 | | serves 25 member agencies, 22 area fire departments, and 3 | 5 | | private ambulance services; and | 6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Zydlo served as medical director of Northwest | 7 | | Community's Emergency
Medical Service system and its emergency | 8 | | department for nearly 25 years; and | 9 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Zydlo was a highly respected instructor, | 10 | | demanding as much from his paramedic
students as he did himself | 11 | | and teaching paramedic students to never second-guess | 12 | | themselves or
hesitate because it can lead to mistakes and loss | 13 | | of crucial time when helping a patient; and | 14 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Zydlo was highly respected by the many | 15 | | firefighters he helped train as
paramedics and for establishing | 16 | | the foundation of emergency medical response by fire
| 17 | | departments; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, The work of Dr. Zydlo has helped to save an untold | 19 | | number of lives; Reverend Brian
Simpson stated in his eulogy, | 20 | | "Stan was not just a private citizen. He was a public treasure. | 21 | | Imagine if
he had not been here. How many of our friends and | 22 | | family wouldn't be here still?"; therefore, be it

| 1 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 2 | | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | 3 | | mourn the passing of Dr. Stanley Zydlo, and we extend our | 4 | | sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew | 5 | | and loved him and we thank him for the impact he left upon this | 6 | | world; and be it further
| 7 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | 8 | | presented to the family of Dr. Zydlo as an expression of our | 9 | | deepest sympathy.
