| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of John | 4 | | Henry McGowan Sr. of Chicago, who recently passed away; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, He was born on April 26, 1942 in Hughes, Arkansas, | 6 | | to Jody and Ora McGowan; he accepted Christ at an early age; he | 7 | | attended Cregier High School in Chicago; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, John met his beloved wife Barbara in 1963; they | 9 | | were married on August 14, 1965; John and Barbara were members | 10 | | of the Thompson Community Singers; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, He was employed with Oscar Meyer and retired when | 12 | | the Chicago plant closed; he dedicated himself to being his | 13 | | wife Barbara's official driver to various Cook County events; | 14 | | he was President of the Gladys/Van Buren Townhouse | 15 | | Organization, where he lived; he coached a little league | 16 | | baseball team named the Texas Rangers and was involved in | 17 | | politics, working in the Harold Washington campaign and playing | 18 | | a strategic role in the Byrne Burners and Boss Buster | 19 | | operations; he was also involved in other political activities | 20 | | across the City of Chicago and Cook County; and | 21 | | WHEREAS, He was known for his BBQ and fried chicken, his |

| 1 | | art of washing a car, and his sweet, sweet peas; some | 2 | | highlights of his life were to give his daughter, Donna to | 3 | | Wesley (who was like a son to him) and when he participated in | 4 | | the 1st Million Man March; he enjoyed an athletic life; he | 5 | | would often lift weights with his son, John, Jr.; and | 6 | | WHEREAS, He would travel great distances to support his | 7 | | son, John, Jr. and grandson, Tony, at their football games; in | 8 | | addition, he would be present at his granddaughter Kelsee's | 9 | | games of volleyball, basketball, and track; a proud moment was | 10 | | when his youngest granddaughter, Ta'Sandra, was called to read | 11 | | a book at one of her daycare graduations; he was his | 12 | | grandchildren's #1 fan; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents; his | 14 | | daughter, Joan; and his sister, Thormaine; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, John McGowan Sr. is survived by his wife, Barbara | 16 | | Jean; his children, Donna (Wesley) and John, Jr; his 3 loving | 17 | | grandchildren, Tony Donte, Kelsee' Simone, and Ta'Sandra Marie | 18 | | Jeanette; his sisters, Dorothy and Eddie; his special brother | 19 | | "in crime", Frank "Gene" Stanton (Addie); his God Daughter, | 20 | | LaShawn; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles, aunts, | 21 | | and friends; therefore, be it

| 1 | | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 2 | | we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of | 3 | | John McGowan Sr.; and be it further
| 4 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 5 | | presented to the family of John McGowan Sr. as a symbol of our | 6 | | sincere sympathy.
