| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan began following | 3 | | the attacks on United States soil on September 11, 2001; and | 4 | | the members of the Illinois House of Representatives are proud | 5 | | to honor the men and women who serve, and have served, in our | 6 | | nations' armed forces; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, The war on terror represents a global military, | 8 | | political, legal, and ideological struggle against | 9 | | organizations designated as terrorists or presented as posing a | 10 | | threat to the United States and its allies; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Members of the Illinois National Guard, the United | 12 | | States Air Force, the United States Navy, the United States | 13 | | Army, and the United States Marines have served in Iraq and | 14 | | Afghanistan with the goal of defeating terrorist organizations | 15 | | and defending United States citizens at home and abroad; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, The war in Afghanistan, "Operation Enduring | 17 | | Freedom", consisted of 3 phases: toppling the Taliban, | 18 | | rebuilding the Afghan state, and a turn to counterinsurgency | 19 | | whereby United States forces protected the population from | 20 | | Taliban attacks and supported efforts to reintegrate | 21 | | insurgents into Afghan society; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, The war in Iraq, "Operation Iraqi Freedom", | 2 | | consisted of 2 phases: a brief, conventionally fought war in | 3 | | which United States forces invaded Iraq and rapidly defeated | 4 | | Iraqi military, and a longer phase in which a U.S. led | 5 | | occupation of Iraq was opposed by an increasingly intensive | 6 | | armed insurgency; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, One hundred and fifty-eight Illinois residents | 8 | | have lost their lives in the war in Iraq and 79 Illinois | 9 | | residents lost their lives in the war in Afghanistan; and | 10 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 11 | | Representatives are proud to honor the men and women who serve, | 12 | | and have served, in our nations' armed forces; therefore, be it
| 13 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 14 | | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 15 | | we declare April 18, 2012 as Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans | 16 | | Remembrance Day in the State of Illinois as a way of | 17 | | remembering the men and women from Illinois who bravely served | 18 | | in the those wars.
