| 2 | | WHEREAS, The Illinois House of Representatives is pleased | 3 | | to congratulate the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy's | 4 | | students, staff, faculty, and alumni on the 25th anniversary of | 5 | | the Academy; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy's | 7 | | distinctive contributions to the State of Illinois, the nation, | 8 | | and the world in the fields of science, technology, engineering | 9 | | and mathematics (STEM), education and other fields are | 10 | | deserving of recognition as well; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, The Academy is a State, national and global leader | 12 | | in diverse STEM talent development, student inquiry and | 13 | | research, student achievement, professional development for | 14 | | educators, and the design of innovative teaching and learning | 15 | | environments and practices;
and | 16 | | WHEREAS, Academy programs and services for students, | 17 | | teachers, and other educators are delivered at its campus in | 18 | | Aurora, through its field offices in Chicago, Metro East, and | 19 | | Rock Island, at various other sites throughout Illinois, and | 20 | | on-line; and | 21 | | WHEREAS, In 2011-2012, the Academy is celebrating its 25th |

| 1 | | Anniversary year and a distinguished quarter of a century of | 2 | | inspiring, challenging, and nurturing students who are | 3 | | talented in mathematics and science to realize their | 4 | | extraordinary potential, live ethical and exemplary lives of | 5 | | service, and advance the human condition;
and | 6 | | WHEREAS, In the past 25 years, the Academy, inspired by Dr. | 7 | | Leon Lederman, the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics in | 8 | | 1988, has graduated nearly 5,000 students, served thousands of | 9 | | Illinois teachers and students in its statewide outreach | 10 | | programs, attracted considerable private sector support, and | 11 | | brought positive national and global recognition to the State | 12 | | of Illinois; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Recent examples of the Academy and it's | 14 | | recognition include: the Academy was named the nationwide | 15 | | winner of the Intel Star Innovator Award; its student teams | 16 | | received the highest ranking possible in the annual | 17 | | international High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling; | 18 | | and the Academy and several State agencies collaborated to | 19 | | develop and facilitate the Illinois Innovation Talent Program | 20 | | which fosters partnerships between industry and Illinois high | 21 | | schools; and
| 22 | | WHEREAS, The Academy will continue to develop diverse STEM | 23 | | talent, student and alumni researchers, entrepreneurs, |

| 1 | | engineers, physicians, technologists, and leaders in all | 2 | | fields who will tackle challenges such as developing | 3 | | sustainable energy, discovering cures and treatments for | 4 | | dreaded human ailments, inventing new products and services | 5 | | that change the way people live, learn, and work, and who will | 6 | | help our State and nation compete and collaborate effectively | 7 | | in the global arena; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, The Academy also will continue to be a catalyst | 9 | | and laboratory for the advancement of teaching and stimulating | 10 | | excellence for all Illinois schools in mathematics and science; | 11 | | therefore, be it
| 12 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 13 | | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 14 | | we congratulate Dr. Leon Lederman, the Academy's current and | 15 | | past Presidents, Dr. Glenn W. "Max" McGee and Dr. Stephanie | 16 | | Pace Marshall, respectively, and all trustees, staff, faculty, | 17 | | students, alumni, parents, and partners of the Illinois | 18 | | Mathematics and Science Academy for 25 years of success, | 19 | | leadership, and innovation; and be it further
| 20 | | RESOLVED, That we wish the Academy well in all its future | 21 | | endeavors to ignite and nurture creative, ethical scientific | 22 | | minds that will advance the human condition; and be it further |
