| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are pleased to congratulate the Illinois | 4 | | School for the Deaf in Jacksonville on the occasion of the | 5 | | 175th anniversary of the school's founding; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, In 1838, Senator Orville H. Browning from Quincy | 7 | | was so impressed by a fellow steamboat traveler, an educated | 8 | | deaf man from Kentucky, that he decided to propose legislation | 9 | | to establish a school that would give educational opportunities | 10 | | for the deaf citizens of Illinois; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Senator Browning enlisted the support of State | 12 | | Representative Abraham Lincoln for passage in the Illinois | 13 | | House of Representatives; on February 23, 1839, Governor Thomas | 14 | | Carlin signed Browning's bill creating the Illinois Asylum for | 15 | | the Education of the Deaf and Dumb; in 1903, the school's name | 16 | | was changed to the Illinois School for the Deaf; and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Throughout the years, the Illinois School of the | 18 | | Deaf has grown considerably; on the day that the school opened, | 19 | | there was a humble enrollment of 2 students, with 14 students | 20 | | the following year; today, it serves an impressive 253 students | 21 | | throughout the various programs that are offered; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf is recognized as | 2 | | a valuable community asset and has gained a prestigious | 3 | | reputation in the State as a premier institution for the deaf | 4 | | and those hard of hearing; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf has done an | 6 | | extraordinary job in accomplishing its mission to educate | 7 | | students who are deaf and hard of hearing to become | 8 | | responsible, self-supporting citizens; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf has shown | 10 | | exemplary leadership with the students in helping them achieve | 11 | | their highest academic and social potential through their | 12 | | instructional, residential, and recreational programs and | 13 | | related support services; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf empowers students | 15 | | to explore technological trends and employment opportunities | 16 | | for the future, while also providing a safe, healthy, and | 17 | | respectful learning, living, and working environment; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf offers an | 19 | | extraordinarily supportive and caring atmosphere in order for | 20 | | its students to develop positive self-esteem and skills | 21 | | necessary to be successful in an ever-changing world; and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf's 175th | 2 | | anniversary celebration will take place on February 22, 2014 at | 3 | | the Jacksonville Country Club; the celebration will include | 4 | | dinner and a live performance honoring the founding of the | 5 | | school; therefore, be it
| 6 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 7 | | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 8 | | we congratulate the Illinois School for the Deaf on its 175th | 9 | | anniversary and wish the school's administration and faculty | 10 | | many more years of success in the future; and be it further
| 11 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 12 | | presented to the Illinois School for the Deaf as an expression | 13 | | of our esteem and respect.
