| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are pleased to congratulate the Illinois | 4 | | School for the Deaf in Jacksonville on the occasion of the | 5 | | 175th anniversary of its founding; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, In 1838, Senator Orville H. Browning from Quincy | 7 | | was so impressed by a fellow steamboat traveler, an educated | 8 | | deaf man from Kentucky, that he decided to propose legislation | 9 | | to establish a school that would give educational opportunities | 10 | | for the deaf citizens of Illinois; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Senator Browning enlisted the support of State | 12 | | Representative Abraham Lincoln for passage in the Illinois | 13 | | House of Representatives; on February 23, 1839, Governor Thomas | 14 | | Carlin signed Browning's bill creating the Illinois Asylum for | 15 | | the Education of the Deaf and Dumb; and | 16 | | WHEREAS, In 1903, the school's name was changed to the | 17 | | Illinois School for the Deaf; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Throughout the years, the Illinois School of the | 19 | | Deaf has grown considerably, with a humble enrollment of 4 | 20 | | students on opening day and 14 students the following year; | 21 | | today, it serves an impressive 253 students throughout the |

| 1 | | various programs that are offered; and
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf is recognized as | 3 | | a valuable community asset and has gained a prestigious | 4 | | reputation in the State as a premier institution for the deaf | 5 | | and those hard of hearing; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf has done an | 7 | | extraordinary job in accomplishing its mission to educate | 8 | | students who are deaf and hard of hearing to become | 9 | | responsible, self-supporting citizens; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf has shown | 11 | | exemplary leadership with the students in helping them achieve | 12 | | their highest academic and social potential through their | 13 | | instructional, residential, and recreational programs and | 14 | | related support services; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf empowers students | 16 | | to explore technological trends and employment opportunities | 17 | | for the future, while also providing a safe, healthy, and | 18 | | respectful learning, living, and working environment; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf offers an | 20 | | extraordinarily supportive and caring atmosphere in order for | 21 | | its students to develop positive self-esteem and skills |

| 1 | | necessary to be successful in an ever-changing world; and | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Illinois School for the Deaf's 175th | 3 | | anniversary celebration will take place on February 22, 2014 at | 4 | | the Jacksonville Country Club; the celebration will include | 5 | | dinner and a live performance honoring the founding of the | 6 | | school; therefore, be it
| 7 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 8 | | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 9 | | we congratulate the Illinois School for the Deaf on its 175th | 10 | | anniversary and wish the school's administration and faculty | 11 | | many more years of success in the future; and be it further
| 12 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 13 | | presented to the Illinois School for the Deaf as an expression | 14 | | of our esteem and respect.
