| 2 | | WHEREAS, Sarcoidosis is a rare disease that results from | 3 | | inflammation; the cause is currently unknown; it usually | 4 | | develops between the ages of 20 and 40 and almost 90% of the | 5 | | cases are found in the lungs and lymph nodes, but it can occur | 6 | | in almost any organ; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Sarcoidosis causes small lumps, or granulomas, | 8 | | which generally heal and disappear on their own; for those | 9 | | granulomas that do not heal, the tissue can remain inflamed and | 10 | | become scarred or fibrotic; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Sarcoidosis can develop into pulmonary fibrosis, | 12 | | which distorts the structure of the lungs and can interfere | 13 | | with breathing; bronchiectasis, a lung disease in which pockets | 14 | | form in the air tubes of the lung and can become sites for | 15 | | infection, can also occur; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Most sarcoidosis patients do not have symptoms and | 17 | | can be unaware they have the disease; symptoms include | 18 | | shortness of breath, a persistent cough, rashes on the face, | 19 | | arms, or shins, inflammation of the eyes, weight loss, fatigue, | 20 | | night sweats, fever, pain in the chests, joints, and bones, | 21 | | swollen lymph nodes, and wheezing; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Treatment for sarcoidosis is unique to the patient | 2 | | as different treatments work for different people; sometimes | 3 | | more than one treatment is used and, in many cases, no | 4 | | treatment is needed; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Sarcoidosis occurs in all races and both genders, | 6 | | but the most susceptible populations seem to be those of | 7 | | African-American, Scandinavian, and Asian origin; therefore, | 8 | | be it
| 9 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 10 | | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 11 | | we urge the Department of Human Services, the Department of | 12 | | Healthcare and Family Services, and the Department of Public | 13 | | Health to assess the existing State and federal assistance | 14 | | programs regarding the study and treatment of sarcoidosis; and | 15 | | be it further
| 16 | | RESOLVED, That we urge the appropriate departments to | 17 | | conduct hearings, examine the above-mentioned ancillary | 18 | | issues, and publish a report on their findings; and be it | 19 | | further | 20 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | 21 | | presented to Secretary of Human Services, Michelle R.B. | 22 | | Saddler, Director of Healthcare and Family Services, Julie |
