| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Michael J. "Mike" Niska of McHenry, who | 4 | | passed away on August 12, 2015; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Mike Niska was born in Deer River, Minnesota on | 6 | | March 25, 1946 to Arne H. and Jean E. (nee Huck) Niska; he was | 7 | | raised in McHenry; he was part of the McHenry Little League | 8 | | when it was formed in 1954 and was a member of the first class | 9 | | to complete 8 grades at St. Patrick School; he graduated from | 10 | | Marian Central Catholic High School in 1964, where he | 11 | | participated in baseball, basketball, and cross country; and | 12 | | WHEREAS, Mike Niska was a member of the United States | 13 | | Marine Corps, serving 2 tours during the Vietnam War; he was | 14 | | awarded the Purple Heart Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with | 15 | | 3 Bronze Battle Stars, and the Combat Action Ribbon; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Mike Niska worked for Lakeland Construction and | 17 | | Curran Contracting and finished as a foreman for Harry W. Kuhn | 18 | | of West Chicago; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Mike Niska was the past Commander of American | 20 | | Legion Post 491 in 1988 and 1989, acting as the Quarter Master | 21 | | of the Post 491 Rifle Squad; he was also a life member of |

| 1 | | McHenry County VietNow; he was a member of the Marine Corps | 2 | | Heritage Foundation, the National Rifle Association, the | 3 | | McHenry County Shooters Club, the Illinois Sheriffs' | 4 | | Association, the McHenry County Right to Carry Association, and | 5 | | the McHenry County Historical Society; he enjoyed fishing, | 6 | | shooting, and participating in the Marine Corps Toys for Tots | 7 | | Program during Christmas seasons; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Mike Niska was preceded in death by his mother, | 9 | | Jean Sherwood; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Huck, Sr.; | 10 | | and his aunt and uncle, Larry and Katherine Huck, Jr.; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Mike Niska is survived by his cousins, Theresa | 12 | | Smith and Lawrence Huck, III; therefore, be it
| 13 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | 14 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 15 | | Michael J. "Mike" Niska, and extend our sincere condolences to | 16 | | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | 17 | | further
| 18 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 19 | | presented to the family of Mike Niska as an expression of our | 20 | | deepest sympathy.
