| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are pleased to congratulate
Martin Buehler on | 4 | | the occasion of his retirement after many years of service with | 5 | | the Lake County Division of Transportation; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Martin Buehler is a graduate of the University of | 7 | | Illinois in Champaign/Urbana, where he earned his | 8 | | undergraduate degree in civil engineering; he subsequently | 9 | | earned his master's degree in civil engineering from | 10 | | Northwestern University and completed the Illinois Department | 11 | | of Transportation's Executive Leadership Development Series; | 12 | | and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Martin Buehler is a licensed professional | 14 | | engineer in the State of Illinois; he began his professional | 15 | | career with Lake County as a summer intern at the Lake County | 16 | | Division of Transportation; after 4 years as a summer employee, | 17 | | he was hired as a full-time employee at the DOT Construction | 18 | | Division in January of 1973; in 1976, he became the county's | 19 | | first traffic engineer; he was appointed to serve as County | 20 | | Engineer in 1984 and was reappointed in 1990, 1996, and 2002; | 21 | | and
| 22 | | WHEREAS, Martin Buehler was instrumental in the creation of |

| 1 | | numerous initiatives during his tenure at the Lake County | 2 | | Division of Transportation, including the creation of the | 3 | | county's nationally-recognized Transportation Management | 4 | | Center and Lake County PASSAGE, the construction of the | 5 | | county's first roundabout, the creation of 48 miles of bike | 6 | | paths, and the creation of a set of large congestion reducing | 7 | | roadway projects through the county's first-ever challenge | 8 | | bond program; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Martin Buehler has been a member of numerous | 10 | | professional and civic organizations, including the Illinois | 11 | | Association of County Engineers (IACE), the American Road and | 12 | | Transportation Builders Association, the American Society of | 13 | | Civil Engineers, the Illinois Society of Professional | 14 | | Engineers, the Institute of Transportation Engineers, the | 15 | | National Association of County Engineers (NACE), the Grayslake | 16 | | Zoning Board and Plan Commission, the Grayslake American Youth | 17 | | Soccer Association, the American Association of State Highway | 18 | | and Transportation Officials, the Nature Conservancy, the | 19 | | Rails to Trails Conservancy, and the Transportation Research | 20 | | Board; he is also a past member of the State of Illinois | 21 | | Interagency Bikeway Council; and
| 22 | | WHEREAS, Martin Buehler has received numerous awards and | 23 | | honors for his work, including the Professional Transportation | 24 | | Manager of the Year award from the American Public Works |

| 1 | | Association's Chicago Metro Chapter, the Past Presidents Award | 2 | | from the Illinois Section of the Institute of Transportation | 3 | | Engineers, the Zone I Engineer of the Year award from the | 4 | | Illinois Association of County Engineers, the Urban Engineer of | 5 | | the Year award from the National Association of County | 6 | | Engineers, and the Amstutz Memorial Award from the Illinois | 7 | | Society of Professional Engineers; and | 8 | | WHEREAS, Martin Buehler and his wife, Kathy, are the | 9 | | parents of 3 children; therefore, be it
| 10 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 11 | | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 12 | | we congratulate Martin Buehler on the occasion of his | 13 | | retirement and wish him many happy and healthy retirement | 14 | | years; and be it further
| 15 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 16 | | presented to Martin Buehler as a symbol of our esteem and | 17 | | respect.
