| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The Village of Teutopolis is celebrating its | 3 | | Terquasquicentennial, the 175th anniversary of its founding, | 4 | | from July 26 to August 3, 2014; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, The location of Teutopolis, on the old National | 6 | | Road in the northeastern part of Effingham County, was selected | 7 | | after 4 months' search through Illinois and Missouri by Clemens | 8 | | Uptmor, John Waschefort, and Gerhard Bergfeld in 1837; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Teutopolis was settled beginning in 1839 by | 10 | | members of the Deutsche Land-Compagnie, an association of 142 | 11 | | German immigrant families living in Cincinnati, Ohio; in 2014, | 12 | | it is the oldest town in Effingham County; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, The arrival of the Franciscan priests and brothers | 14 | | in 1858, and the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1861, were key | 15 | | events in creating a strong, vital community that takes | 16 | | seriously both its relationship with God and its | 17 | | responsibilities to educate its children and work for the | 18 | | support of its families and cherishes its continuing | 19 | | connections with the Franciscans and the School Sisters of | 20 | | Notre Dame; and
| 21 | | WHEREAS, Teutopolis students continually excel in |

| 1 | | academics, always scoring among the top area schools, and far | 2 | | above the State average, in annual tests; in athletics, | 3 | | Teutopolis schools have won State championships in basketball, | 4 | | baseball, and track and too many trophies to count; much of | 5 | | this success is due to the efforts of a long line of dedicated | 6 | | teachers and coaches; and | 7 | | WHEREAS, The Teutopolis business community thrives with | 8 | | over 100 enterprises, of which almost all are locally owned; | 9 | | the village has 58 working people for every 1,001 residents, | 10 | | making it one of the busiest towns in the United States; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Over many years, hundreds of men and women from | 12 | | Teutopolis have loyally served their country as members of the | 13 | | armed forces and 13 have given their lives in conflicts from | 14 | | the Civil War to the Vietnam War; and | 15 | | WHEREAS, The fraternal and service organizations of | 16 | | Teutopolis have donated much time and effort and have | 17 | | generously raised and provided funds for a myriad of worthy | 18 | | causes in the community, the area, and beyond; these | 19 | | organizations include the Knights of Columbus, the Lions Club, | 20 | | the Teutopolis Community for Progress, the Holy Name Society, | 21 | | the Council of Catholic Women, the Catholic Daughters of | 22 | | America, St. Francis Youth Council, the Catholic Heart Work | 23 | | Camp, American Legion Post 924, the Teutopolis Education |

| 1 | | Foundation, and Sportsbackers; and
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Today, Teutopolis stands as a shining example of | 3 | | the results of hard work, self-discipline, genuine care, and | 4 | | concern for one's family and neighbors; Teutopolis citizens | 5 | | live with respect for the past and vision for the future; | 6 | | therefore, be it
| 7 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 8 | | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 9 | | we congratulate the citizens of the Village of Teutopolis on | 10 | | the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the community; and be | 11 | | it further
| 12 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 13 | | presented to the citizens of the Village of Teutopolis as a | 14 | | symbol of our respect and esteem.
