| 2 | | WHEREAS, The Susan G. Komen Foundation has become the | 3 | | global leader in the fight
against breast cancer, transforming | 4 | | how the world talks about and treats the disease, and has | 5 | | helped turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast | 6 | | cancer
survivors; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Every 2 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast | 8 | | cancer, and every
13 minutes, a woman who is loved is lost to | 9 | | this disease; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Central Illinois native Nancy G. Brinker promised | 11 | | her dying sister Suzy
more than 30 years ago that she would do | 12 | | everything in her power to end breast
cancer forever, with that | 13 | | promise becoming the Susan G. Komen Foundation, now
the largest | 14 | | source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast | 15 | | cancer; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, The Susan G. Komen Memorial Affiliate serves women | 17 | | and families in 36
counties across central Illinois, including | 18 | | Sangamon County; and | 19 | | WHEREAS, The Komen Memorial Affiliate already awarded | 20 | | nearly $80,000 in local
community health grants in the | 21 | | Springfield area last year, including providing free

| 1 | | mammography services to uninsured women; and | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Komen Memorial Affiliate has a successful | 3 | | history of fundraising
events including Race for the Cure 5K | 4 | | races in Peoria and Bloomington, but not yet in
Springfield; | 5 | | and | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Komen Memorial Affiliate is proud to bring the | 7 | | Komen Race for the
Cure to Springfield for the first time on | 8 | | May 16, 2014; and | 9 | | WHEREAS, The Inaugural Komen Springfield Race for the Cure | 10 | | 5K will be the Foundation's first
evening race and will bring | 11 | | participants to downtown Springfield, ending at
the State | 12 | | Capitol; and | 13 | | WHEREAS, Racers of all ages and abilities are encouraged to | 14 | | participate and raise
funds to support the Susan G. Komen | 15 | | Foundation to end breast cancer and save
lives; and | 16 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Jane Arbuthnot and Victoria Ringer, both of | 17 | | Springfield, are serving
as the Race's Honorary | 18 | | Co-Chairpersons; and | 19 | | WHEREAS, Julie Henderson, an 8-year breast cancer | 20 | | survivor, and her daughter
Nicole Henderson, are serving as the |

| 1 | | first Komen Race mother and daughter co-chairpersons;
and | 2 | | WHEREAS, The supporters of the Inaugural Komen Springfield | 3 | | Race for the Cure hope to
"paint the Capitol area pink" in | 4 | | support of breast cancer awareness and finding a
cure, with a | 5 | | highlight of ending the evening with pink fireworks on the | 6 | | Capitol lawn; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, With our help and support, the Komen Memorial | 8 | | Affiliate will raise even
more money to fight breast cancer in | 9 | | our communities with 75% of the net
proceeds directly funding | 10 | | programs in the service area and 25% supporting
national | 11 | | research; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, State Representative David Leitch has long | 13 | | supported the Susan
G. Komen Foundation and Komen Memorial | 14 | | Affiliate, serving as board member and
being a personal friend | 15 | | of the late Suzy Komen, and we thank him and honor him for
his | 16 | | work; therefore, be it
| 17 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 18 | | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 19 | | we recognize the Susan G.
Komen Foundation for its unwavering | 20 | | commitment to saving lives and ending
breast cancer and show | 21 | | our support for the Inaugural Komen Springfield Race for the | 22 | | Cure on May 16, 2014, and wish all those involved all the best |

| 2 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | 3 | | presented to Springfield Race for the Cure co-chairpersons, | 4 | | Julie and Nicole Henderson.
