| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Illinois families currently face one of the | 3 | | highest tax burdens in the nation; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Illinois consistently ranks among the states with | 5 | | the highest property tax liabilities, with only New Jersey | 6 | | having a higher average property tax bill; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, An Illinois homeowner living in a home valued at | 8 | | $184,000 (the median home value in the United States) pays | 9 | | approximately $4,300; a homeowner living in Wisconsin, by | 10 | | comparison, pays approximately $3,600; in Michigan, $3,200; in | 11 | | Iowa, $2,800; in Missouri, $1,800; and in Indiana and Kentucky, | 12 | | $1,600; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Illinois is losing population; families in | 14 | | Illinois have been forced to live in a State where their | 15 | | government appears to only continue finding ways of punishing | 16 | | its residents with an ever-growing need for raising taxes, | 17 | | without making an structural changes that seek to stabilize the | 18 | | out-of-control spending; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, A new proposal is recommending that there be a | 20 | | state-wide property tax levied on homes, leading to an average | 21 | | property tax bill increase of 40 percent; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Such a proposal would, yet again, continue on the | 2 | | wrong trajectory without any guarantee that services will | 3 | | improve, the State's crippling debt will be paid, or any | 4 | | positive benefit will be realized; conversely, such a | 5 | | state-wide property tax would only cause homeowners to strongly | 6 | | consider leaving Illinois, as so many have already done in | 7 | | recent years; Illinoisans deserve better than this; therefore, | 8 | | be it
| 9 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 10 | | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | 11 | | stand in staunch opposition to any new state-wide property tax; | 12 | | and be it further
| 13 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | 14 | | delivered to the Speaker of the House, the House Minority | 15 | | Leader, the Senate President, the Senate Minority Leader, and | 16 | | the Office of the Governor.
