| 2 | | WHEREAS, Congress passed the 19th Amendment to the | 3 | | Constitution of the United States, guided by the shared ideals | 4 | | of freedom, sovereignty, democracy, civil liberties, and | 5 | | individual rights; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, From 1919 to 1920, the Sixty-Sixth Congress | 7 | | debated, and state legislatures considered, an amendment to the | 8 | | Constitution to provide suffrage for women; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, On May 21, 1919, the U.S. House of Representatives | 10 | | approved a proposed amendment, followed by the Senate a few | 11 | | weeks later on June 4, 1919; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, The introduction, passage, and ultimate | 13 | | ratification of the 19th Amendment were the culmination of | 14 | | decades of work and struggle by advocates for the rights of | 15 | | women across the United States and worldwide; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, The ratification of the 19th Amendment ensured | 17 | | women could more fully participate in our democracy and | 18 | | fundamentally changed the role of women in the civic life of | 19 | | our nation; and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, August 18, 2020 marks the centennial of the |

| 1 | | ratification of the 19th Amendment by three-fourths of the | 2 | | states, providing the support necessary under Article V of the | 3 | | Constitution of the United States; and | 4 | | WHEREAS, August 26, 2020 marks the centennial of the 19th | 5 | | Amendment becoming a part of the Constitution of the United | 6 | | States, providing for women's suffrage; therefore, be it
| 7 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | 8 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare August 26, | 9 | | 2020 as "Women's Suffrage Day" in the State of Illinois.
